Thanks for calling this to my attention “fake name”. I didn’t consider the details important to making my point but they are never-the-less important due to the insidious nature of the application of silver nitrate to the eyes and why it was and still is done to newborns.
Silver nitrate or silver salt has antiseptic properties. It reduces the possibility of infection, invasion of the body by pathogenic microorganisms or their toxins and prevents organic material growing in whatever it is. During childbirth, the eyes of many infants are contaminated with bacteria, which infection can lead to serious eye damage and even blindness.
Silver nitrate is a skin and eye irritant. It’s toxic and corrosive. In the year, 1881, it was discovered that a drop of 2% silver nitrate solution put in the eyes of newborn infants prevented gonorrhea infection. This reduced the frequency of newborn blindness by a significant factor, and was an important advance in public health.
During the years 1910-1940, many state legislatures in the USA reacted by passing mandatory statutes that required physicians to put a drop of 1% silver nitrate solution into the eyes of every newborn baby - even though it commonly caused the baby pain and irritated, inflamed eyes. After 1940, better stuff was available, but because of the manner in which the mandate was written, the newer methods couldn't be used and the doctors were not allowed to make choices for themselves.
All that was required to prevent gonorrhea infection was .1% silver nitrate and not 1% or 2%. This was published in 1975 and was known long before that. Chlamydia was not prevented by silver nitrate drops as was heavily advertised at the time.
The “Medline Database” in 2006 listed 480 articles on the eyes reaction to the drops, on prevention of various infections and on recommended treatment standards. However, if you check "Westlaw Databases" you will find absolutely nothing on state statutes “requiring” silver nitrate prevention methods as was heavily propagandized. And no one was allowed to file lawsuit or question the intelligence of the statues.
The chemical exposure to the eyes, caused the eyes of 46% of all the infants to have swollen eyelids after the first day. After the 5th day it gradually went down to 6%. Supposedly it lasts 24 to 36 hours but sometimes persists up to 72 hours. In response to the pain of getting the drops in one eye, it made it extremely difficult to treat the other eye.
<b style="">The bad part is what happens without flushing the eyes with water. The eyes develop a film over them. It’s actually like seeing through a dark or "grey" film. The eyes naturally try to overcome this condition by gradually and/or spontaneously tearing up. Each time the eyes re-tear up, what develops is a dark or “grey” film over the world. This takes place during a critical time in the baby’s life; the mother-child, father and family bonding period immediately following birth.

[/B] Problems with the conjunctiva and cornea are the major source of eye complaints. The conjunctiva is divided into 3 different parts, each of which could develop different types of problems, best evaluated by a trained eye specialist.
Brief exposure will not produce any immediate side effects other than temporary stains. Constant exposure to high concentrations, are noticeable and can cause burns i.e. eye damage.

[/B] Antibiotics became available in the early 1940’s and were a proven replacement. However, the scam was and is still being pushed on doctors.
Iodine was pushed next and does the exact same thing to the eyes as silver nitrate (staining of the effected tissue) causing the same thing to occur as with silver nitrate.
Iodine is known as a wide-spectrum antiseptic that kills bacteria, fungi, viruses and the dreaded Chlamydia, even though they jumped the gun and started advertising the healing of Chlamydia with silver nitrate (which didn’t work) before they started using iodine (which only works with other treatment methods).
2.5% povidone-iodine ophthalmic solution is used to prevent the Chlamydia, but only works if it’s done repeatedly. It’s designed to be done using additional treatment methods.
This means, it’s probably included in the eye drop package deal that all of today’s newborns receive.
