This section is for those of you who are more airy, spacey, scattered; or weak or Tamasic in the Muladhara (Root, Base chakra) aspects:
When in asana, press your feet and/or hands into your mat, have the concept of the core of the limb penetrating into the ground. Engage your muscles, hug them to the bone. Especially for your legs, as these are the expression of the Muladhara chakra. You can then visualize roots growing from your feet into the ground.
For seated asana, visualize roots growing from your Muladhara chakra, pelvis and glutes into the ground.
Imagine the roots are “drinking” up earth energy into your Muladhara chakra.
For reclined/supine asana, feel your body on the ground, have the concept of melting into the mat to allow your limbs and muscles to reach into the ground. Allow yourself to be receptive and passively absorb grounding earth energy. Have the sensation of the ground holding you and supporting your physical body.
When you engage and push into the earth, this generates grounding energy. Instead of the ground, you can push into a wall, either in asana or just face a wall and press your hands into it, lean your weight into it to create resistance. A large sturdy tree will be even more grounding, as well as performing the above grounding methods outdoors in nature; this is optional.
Asana with longer holds such as in Hatha, Yin, or Restorative are more grounding than Vinyasa or Kundalini. Make sure to balance yourself, such as a short Kundalini session rather than none altogether.
For those of you who are too heavy in Muladhara chakra, Rajasic:
You can free the excess energy by pounding your feet into the floor, or bouncing your legs. You can include audible sounds as you exhale. If needed, visualize the energy flowing out of your Muladhara into the ground, or program and visualize it going towards a goal you are working on.
Another method to free the excess energy is to perform Mulabandha to move the energy upwards; this may be overstimulating if you are not ready for this, so perform the previous method until then.
Yoga which is more invigorating may be beneficial for you, such as Vinyasa or Kundalini, rather than long holds in Hatha, Yin, or Restorative. Make sure to balance yourself, such as a short Hatha session rather than none altogether.
