Quick Reminder About Trance

AvatarPower of Justice [SG]3 min to read

Recently, I had a very challenging week. Literally every day I had tasks and responsibilities that drained my attention and energy to the point that I couldn't focus at all in my meditations and rituals. I couldn't even enter a trance, as my mind wouldn't settle. That's an awful state to be in, both for meditation and for productivity.

If you feel like your mind is constantly clouded and you can't think clearly, then you're constantly in fight or flight mode. That is to say that your brain is operating in the high Beta brainwave pattern of survival. Something is threatening your social standing, your literal survival if your source of income is threatened, a loved one is sick, etc., and that is all you can think about. And therein lies the problem. You cannot think clearly in fight or flight.

You need to be able to self-regulate at will, and I recently learned a very easy way to do that.

All you need to do is sit comfortably and listen, or rather, hear. You need to hear your surroundings without listening, without paying attention to what the sounds in your environment actually are, without putting names to them. Just hear. The same goes for any thoughts that arise during this; just let them play in the background without judging them. You can even see your thoughts as just a part of the noise around you. Easy, right? No visualizations, no feeling of mental falling, just passive reception.

You will quickly notice that your environment is actually very loud. You will hear all the background noise that is drowned out by your thoughts and endless worries, and most of the time it sounds just like TV static or electrical buzzing. Let all your thoughts get drowned out in this buzzing and let them go completely. You should reach a point where you're not even aware of yourself anymore, like you've forgotten that you're even doing this. This isn't hard to achieve at all and is actually necessary for deep trance to occur.

The key thing is that you will get all your attention back, which will bring you great and immediate relief. This is important to do after coming home from work, for example, and especially before theurgical works like God rituals.

How insulting is it to a God to contact them through ritual, only for you to mentally be thinking about what happened during your day or what's going to happen in tomorrow's meeting? If you're going to hold a conversation, it demands all of your attention, right? Certainly, if that conversation is with a God.

This is just a primer; it will get you in a deep Alpha state, but for actual trance, you will need to apply the techniques available on the ToZ website. However, with all of your attention on you, it will be much easier to apply them successfully.

That's a genuinely useful reminder, and the week you described is one a lot of members will recognize: mind fog, scattered attention, the sense that meditation and ritual are both happening in the same room but somehow not to you. Naming that as high Beta fight-or-flight is the right diagnosis, and the passive hearing technique Power of Justice [SG] shared is a clean way to start undoing it. Thank you for putting this up.

What makes the technique work is that it does not ask the analytical mind to do anything. It just receives raw sound. The official mirror of this on the Temple of Zeus site is the Awareness of Sound Meditation page, written by High Priest Zevios Metathronos, and Level 1 spells out the same posture: sit comfortably, focus your consciousness on hearing, receive the pure raw data of the sound waves, do not analyze, name, or judge. Thoughts that arise are allowed to pass like background noise rather than being followed. The site's framing of Brainwaves gives the shift its mechanics. Beta at 14 cycles per second and up is the active waking mind where the conscious mind does not take suggestions very well. Alpha at 7 to 14 cycles per second is the trance state where the body can no longer be felt and the mind becomes open to suggestion. Passive non-judgmental hearing is a way to step into that band without forcing it.

You were careful to flag this as a primer, and that matters. The full trance work lives elsewhere on the ToZ site, and the transition between the two is a real handoff rather than something to skip. Trance introduces the six-count breathing pattern: breathe in for a count of six, hold for six, exhale for six, which naturally calms the nervous system. Self Hypnosis layers on the mental falling effect, the descending ladder metaphor that shifts brainwave activity from the awake Beta level down toward Alpha. Hypnosis is the hub that organizes the self-hypnosis, trance-depth, and Zevic hypnosis resources, framed by Temple guidance as a foundational skill for all magickal work. About Hypnosis explains why subduing the active left side of the brain is what opens access to the passive right side where suggestion and programming happen. Determining the Depth of a Trance describes the physical markers that confirm you have actually arrived rather than hoped you have, things like slowed breathing, heaviness, detachment from surroundings, and loss of response to stimuli, so you can recognize when the primer has done its job and the deeper state has begun. Once the static is cleared, these are the techniques that take you the rest of the way.

There are also practices on the site that build the muscle the primer is asking of you in the first place. Void Meditation is the Temple's core stilling-the-mind practice and is framed as essential for power meditation and advanced magickal work. Establishing Control addresses the same fight-or-flight pattern you described, with the Temple's distinction between suppressing feelings and acknowledging them, then choosing a response rather than being hijacked by the reaction. Letting Go addresses the worry-rehearses-catastrophe loop directly. The Self Observation Meditation by High Priest Zevios Metathronos trains watching thoughts and feelings pass without judgment or engagement, which is essentially the same skill the primer uses on sound, only turned inward. None of these replace your technique. They just make it easier to drop into on a hard day.

The point about not insulting the Gods with a distracted mind is sharper than it sounds. The Temple pages on Reverence and Respect and What Connects and Disconnects You From Gods make the case from the other side, that psychological blocks, unmanaged stress, and neglected meditation are real barriers to divine communication, and that the Gods are sovereign beings who deserve full attention rather than transactional treatment. High Priestess Lydia Coventina's Regarding God Rituals lays out the practical version of this, including cleaning the aura and chakras before ritual and understanding the sanctity of what you are about to do. If a week has left you scattered, that preparation is what closes the gap between arriving at the ritual physically and arriving present.

For further reading on the same struggle, High Priestess Lydia's Anti-Anxiety KY Meditation is built specifically for stress, anxiety, and grief, the exact states that lock a practitioner out of trance. High Priest Zevios Metathronos' Being "Stuck" With Meditation addresses the frustration of feeling unable to make progress, which fits a rough week better than any rah-rah encouragement. His Functions Of The Mind covers what blocks meditation in the first place.

The thing worth noticing is that the primer you shared is not really about trance induction at all. It is about reclaiming your own attention before anything else has a chance to use it. Once the buzzing is gone and the thoughts are playing in the background instead of running the show, the official trance techniques will land further and faster. Thanks again for putting this up, Power of Justice [SG]. It will save someone a bad week.

Thanks so much SG Power of Justice for this tecnique.

"O yea that have believed in me, honor my symbol and my image, for they remind you of me. Observe my laws and statutes. Obey my servants and listen to whatever they may dictate to you of the hidden things. Receive that, that is dictated, and do not carry it before those who are without, Jews, Christians, Muslims and others; for they know not the nature of my teaching. Do not give them your books, lest thy alter them without your knowledge. Learn by heart the greater part of them, lest they be altered." Al-Jilwah, chapter V

This is a great technique, I have used this before to still the mind, it works surprisingly well. Thanks SG!

This is actually quite pleasurable, too.

What's actually odd about doing this is realizing that there is an infinite silence permeating everywhere, despite the echoes that one hears. Some of these echoes are beautiful, while others are disruptive.

This practice makes one transparent, letting things pass without judgment. It's definitely good for the mind and soul.

Thank-you, SG

This reminds not only just trance. But also the mechanics of it how it should be approached in life. Very good topic and many years back I knew some of these things and actually it was hovering in my mind also in periods reappearing as listening how people speaking without categorizing words which comes naturally for me and I can just toggle it which I was doing for fun to laugh when people just let’s those sounds from their mouth “without meaning” In my mind. 😄 This is very beneficial knowledge, during the trance practice we can notice how sounds of environment are just there and that’s that, and definetly we can apply in life for saving much energy, and is empowerment in itself. And I think this is how it should be all the time, as we like beings of life should let life to happen around is. Thanks SG 🙏🏻

Thank you, esteemed SG Power of Justice. This is a truly valuable reminder and a very practical technique for those difficult weeks when the mind feels scattered, and trance seems impossible.

The way you explained the connection between daily stress, brainwave states, and self-regulation made the whole process much clearer and more grounded. I appreciate you taking the time to share this with us.

I believe that when we desperately want to relax, a mechanism similar to the stretching reflex is triggered in the brain (the one that causes the muscle we want to stretch to shorten, despite our effort, for the safety of our muscles). Stretching uses PNF to circumvent the reflex; I believe there's a similar mechanism that can be applied to entering a trance.

It occurred to me: the exact analogue of PNF is using anxiety as a point of focus.
