It does not matter I do a breath per word as that  is how it just works out for me.

From my own personal experience so far, may I suggest don't force your breath. There's no need to rush the mantra. Take your time. I am doing the Kabbalistic Sun Square, and can do the mantras comfortably in three breaths (but that's just me, even though I can also do it in two.) When you do the mantra, do what feels comfortable, pleasurable and natural to you, whether it takes one breath or five. Feel out the vibrations when you do them, and find the rhythm that feels best to you. As long as you can feel the vibrations resonating within you when you vibrate.
Hail Satan!

I forgot to add that in doing three breaths (for me, everyone is different...do what is comfortable, natural and pleasurable to you when vibrating the mantras) I have achieved my goal (also with the help of Father Satan, Lord Anubis and my Guardians ^.^ ) in doing the Kabbalistic Sun Square. Even though I have achieved my goal, I am still finishing up the Sun Square, it's important to finish what one started.

Preferably you will want each vibration to flow into another with no gaps.\nThere are shorcuts, These can be hard mantras to vibrate for the most of us. Thanks Shannon. :)For every breath I drew, I inhaled the energy of the sun into my being. After the mantra, I would visualize, step by step, my goal, know it has happened and feel it happening, and then do the affirmations for my goal, in three short sentences that were in the present tense. So far, it has worked. ^.^

Ok, I personally can do then in one breath, just because I have always been able to take in a massive amount of air compared to other people, or am better at controlling the intake and release, idk. But glad to know that it can be done with multiple breaths. That goes for affirmations too I assume?\n \n
