I find it more distracting and less relaxing to do the breathing recommended under the trance training exercise. I feel that I get more relaxed faster if I just void meditate instead of the whole breathing count.
 
Do what works best for you, we are all different. Different methods work for different people. Counting doesn't relax me either. The best method for me is to use blue energy.

I have been doing something different too lydia and Sven.Since we have to breath anyway,I just count how many times I breath in and out,rather then holding it and counting.But like you said lydia,different strokes for different folks.But I do try my best to slow my breathing too.I have found that the slower I breath,the more relaxed I become.
