This "Patrick's Day"

I know it's some sort of catholic holiday, but is it its own holiday, or did it have a pagan holiday before it (like how the xians replaced Yule with xmas)?

What I heard was that St. Patrick was a catholic priest,that was celebrated for getting the snakes(pagans)out of Ireland.Maybe H P Don can give us more history on that one if he chooses.

how did St.  Patrick's Day come to be and is is a RHP thing or is it something RHP peeps stole from us years ago or is it something different entirely?
