This "Patrick's Day"

I know it's some sort of catholic holiday, but is it its own holiday, or did it have a pagan holiday before it (like how the xians replaced Yule with xmas)?

how did St.  Patrick's Day come to be and is is a RHP thing or is it something RHP peeps stole from us years ago or is it something different entirely?
i am curious to know more about this day also?
