I am reading an interesting history book - White Cargo; the Forgotten History of Britain's White Slaves in America by Don Jordan & Michael Walsh - and have come across an illustration how closely similar communism, xianity and monarchies can be:

(pgs 62-3)

"Along with murder, sodomy, rape and lese-majesty, the code made blasphemy and irregular attendance at church capital  crimes. Everyone had to attend church twice a day. On Sundays, a bell sounded half an hour before the first service. The gates of Jamestown were barred and guarded while search parties went into every building looking for anyone not in church. Those caught missing church three times faced execution. Special moral guard - four per preacher - were to be appointed to spy and report on what went on at other times."

Here, xianity is the rule; people had no choice but to attend church or die. I wonder how much control the preachers had over government.

and

"Almost everything was to be communal. Meals were all to be eaten in refectories. There was no private ownership. All work was for the company. Overseers stood over you to ensure no one was 'negligent and idle'. Tools and implements, even your own, had to be handed in when a drum or whistle sounded to end the day."
Nothing is yours; not your tools, your days, your (nonexistent right to) privacy. Everything is for the company; everything is also in the name of god.
and

"... Not everyone had to labor. 'The extraordinary men, divines, governors, ministers of state and justice, knights, gentlemen, physicians and such as be men of worth for special purposes' were not required to work."
In other words, "Some people are more equal than others.
This works in communism, where those in charge of the government are on top; it works in monarchies, where the 'royals' are on top; it works in many forms of xianity, where the pope/preacher/visionary/minister and his chosen people (rarely, her) are on top of everyone else.
Now, I know that there are far more advanced students of history who can write with more insight; I am offering this forth as food for thought.

When I saw it, I knew I had to find it. I knew that Russians had been owned - my own great-great parents had been serfs/slaves who had been forced to marry each other - but had no idea about the Irish & English slaves.
