Carl Johan Calleman author of book " Solving the Greatest Mystery of Our time The Mayan Calendar " says the October 28, 2011 date is based on massive scientific evidence that the Nine Underworlds and Thirteen Heavens known from ancient Mayan sources indeed describe cosmic evolution in all of its aspects. Moreover, while there is extensive evidence that the Maya based prophecy and prediction on shifts between baktuns, katuns, tuns etc, not a single ancient Mayan text mentions the 26,000 year precessional cycle. Since those advocating the December 21, 2012 end date do not identify shift points in the Mayan calendar leading up to their end date their hypothesis is however not testable from the predictions made, which is the hallmark of any serious scientific theory. Hence, it must be qualified as belief rather than science. Based on nothing more than belief a culture has subsequently emerged around the December 21, 2012 date, since it serves as an ideal projection screen for fantasies, fears and hopes rather than something that can be proven and understood scientifically based on the patterns of the Mayan calendar."

I agree. The texts don't exist but the conundrum remans, thanks to xtianity where, in the case of the Maya, the bishop and inquisitor Diego de Landa spearheaded the systematic burning of hundreds of thousands of codices, along with people, in their autos-da-fe (translation: "act of faith") thus extinguishing the culture and the scientific knowledge of the Maya (and others).

With the "evidence" thus removed, we are left with a lot of speculation. Speculation that may be very accurate in most respects, but speculation nonetheless. However, considering how precise their astronomy, etc. was, we can perhaps be 'forgiven' for cutting them a little slack, so to speak.

The date represents the end of what was called "The Fifth Sun". Four "suns" or "ages", preceded it, complete with similar doomsday, end-of-world prophesies. Obviously, the world has survived all four "suns" and will survive the fifth as well. What will follow will be the "Sixth Sun". The translation will have all the might and power and upheaval of the Y2K scare! Remember how that one was supposed to bring what we naively call civilization to its knees?

New agers and others "without" are making hay with 2012 as we all know, including a plethora of TV programs such as the very silly "Nostradamus Effect". All part of their agenda one would think. (Incidentally, I was in a conversation with another about all this silliness and that person mentioned that all the 2012 fear mongering could result in some mass suicides amongst various cults and individuals of the "Heaven's Gate" variety. She may be correct, because those kinds of people are so easily led.)

One thing I learned from one of those programs (then followed it up myself not expecting to find they were actually right) was the true meaning of the word "apocalypse". It has come to mean "destruction", "annihilation", or "armageddon" thanks mostly to the xtian bible book called "Revelation". But the original meaning of the word is "removing the veil", "exposing what was hidden". (It's an Old English word via Old French and Ecclesiastical Latin from the Greek "apokalupsis" from "apokaluptein" ("uncover" "reveal") from "apo" ("un") plus "kauluptein" ("to cover"). When it comes to secrets being laid bare, now that just might make a measure of sense !!
