Not necessarily more popular. Sheep were more dominant in Israel (of course), and in Egypt, India, and West Africa, the most common animals were cattle (as made iconic in their spiritual traditions). Goats were specifically for the loners, the "woods witches," the independent souls that the "1%" of the day utterly despised. It gives you a whole new perspective on "Goat of a Thousand Young" and "Goat's Head Pentagram". I think if we made these symbols more "noble" looking (see first picture) and less obviously "threatening," we could really make a PR coup.
