But some have said that just cleaning and strengthening is not enough. Wouldn't it be any extra to try to use it after working on the chakras?

Focus on cleaning and work on your chakras. Eventually as your being cleanses and your chakras open up the astral is easier to tune into.
Cleaning, void and open chakras are the foundation on which everything else builds up onto. Also one should be in good health and have flexible body for the energy to move unhidered and also to support always increasing life-force. So those should be mastered over first few years. Our rate of progress varies a lot, so maybe it will take shorter or maybe longer for you to open chakras and so on. We can't tell, and also everyone has their strong points, and weak points. It is wise to work on the weak points to get those up to the level of strong points. The progress on these things newer stops, really, you simply get better and better all the while adding new things on top of those and modifying the existing. Like doing complex cleaning rituals, or voiding mind totally for extended period or advanced chakra working. To get to that level one must first get the hang of basics on which to build the more complex stuff. Don't expect great success from Merkaba meditation, for example, without going into trance sufficiently.
So yeah, it is enough. As you grow, your methods need to be remodeled, but the foundation stays the same.
