stereotypes and misperceptions?

I'm interested to know if anyone would be willing to talk about being stereotyped? Do people generally draw conclusions about what kind of person you are when you tell them you are a Satanist? Are the conclusions right? Wrong? Do you feel as if people make assumptions of you based on incorrect knowledge?

I was shopping around for a silver bell. I saw one in a shop (this shop was mainly wiccan), but it had a symbol on it. I asked them if they had one without the symbol or an inverted pentagram. I told them I was a Satanist. They sort of looked at me like, 'omg, don't curse me' or 'what a freak'. They tried to hide it, but I could still see it.

Absolutely. Most if not all of us probably do. I don't get the 'but god is good' crap cos most people around where I live are atheists. My friends ask me why, I explain and that's it. I don't receive any hassle anymore. The only time I did was when I was living in the family home but that soon passed.
Funny when I was around 14 I was banned shortly for seeing a xian friend cos her mother thought I was a satanist, just for being a goth at the time. Her wrong doing was soon corrected and a year and a half later I found satan lol. I guess she was right
in the end. I am a satanist and fucking proud!

When I told my sister, she was absolutely OK with it. I told her my beliefs, and she was fine.
When I told my little brother (who is now a Satanist) he was fine with it, and he finally understood that he was being lied to and deceived. 
They did not jump to conclusions or anything, they were fine with it. If you are planning to tell anyone, just make sure they are some one you really trust.

I get it quite alot,but it tends to take an interesting and somewhat amusing twist. I was complimented on my roasry I wear when I go out and when they woman asked if I was wiccan,I told her,"No,Im a Spiritual Satanist. She took 2 steps backwards as many do when I first tell them but then she came in closer and asked about it.We spoke for a few minutes and she left me smiling and shook my hand saying she hoped to meet up with me again. She was surprised at how I was so friendly and approachable.

<td val[/IMG]I know what you mean Motherwolff.When I am at the store,and the conversation comes up,it does take them awhile to warm up to the idea.But then they say,well that's not at all what I thought it was.And then some surprisingly say,that's what I have been feeling for awhile now.Just goes to show,that some are more open to the truth then we think.It's just having enough courage to start the conversation.That's why I don't let anyone intimidate me.But always I do feel the situation out first.No need to share,if it can be dangerous to someone or myself.But I feel we need to be as open about it as we can,to give others the chance Father Satan gave us.

Around my city, people know I am a witch, and Satanist. I live in Cali, so there is not alot of backlash, although I have had a few...

People know I am "normal" or average. I'm friendly to those I am in contact with. Unless I am attacked, of course.

There are all kinds of misperceptions about us. Always will be to the enemy and the blind.

You have to let them get to know you, so they will know or "think' you are harmless. But we all know that we are NOT.

hmm, it's really interesting that a group of Wiccans would be so quick to make assumptions when the Wiccan faith has, historically, been subject to persecution for so long. People are so quick to fear what they don't understand, right?

Exactly. I am well known in my town and people always knew me as the friendly witch.lol. Now they are getting to know me as the friendly Satanist. Many have already spoken to me about my path and have said how they were surprised to find that Satanists aren't mean,evil people that they have to fear.I walk with my head high and a smile for people as I pass on the street. They naturally come to me and ask about my rosary and many other questions. its amazing to see how their perspectives change as we talk. Several have even begun to email me pictures of Lord Baphomet via text and email instead of prayers for their xtian path. Slowly and gradually the truth of our loving Father is being known.

This statement is SOOO wrong!!Wicca is a 20th Century religion, less than 60 years old, Gerald Gardner invented it. You may have confused it with Paganism or Witchcraft, both have no connection to Wicca at all and predate it.
