As someone passionate about history, Astrology is a no brainer for me to study, but, like I assume it is for many others, it was daunting for me to really get into such a massive and complex field.
I like to systematize my approach to things, keeps them consistent. These are four exercises I am labeling as Levels to mirror how the Awareness Meditations work. This method has helped me gain a decent, workable understanding of astrology over a couple months, with just an hour or so a day. None of the information or ideas here are exactly new, I just put my spin on them to create a catchy idea of a fourfold system.
The levels aren't exactly done "one after the other", they build on each other. Ideally, all are done together. But they do expand, from Level 1 being theoretical, into more and more applied versions.
Level 1 - Direct Study of Theory
This is the fundamental level, as it offers the base knowledge, but is useless without the other levels. You want to get a general idea of astrological meanings, important elements of a chart, as well as the best thing that can come out of this level: little tidbits you might have not learned otherwise, even with the other levels.
For this, one should:
1. Study the entirety of the ToZ's material on Astrology. This includes the sites, Astro Apollo, as well as every sermon written on the subject by @High Priestess Lydia .
2. Read books on Astrology. I will not give suggestions here, as everyone is different and needs to learn different things. Pray to your Guardian Daemon, asking Him/Her to guide you towards the right material you should look into, then browse the internet for books available in PDF. You will have a sensation you found the right thing when you find the right thing, or you will notice the book you are studying gives the exact answers you were looking for. This is important, it builds a relationship with the Guardian as well.
Do not read on a surface level and forget a few hours later. Take notes, ponder what is written, use a critical eye for material outside of Zevism, let it be a meditation.
Level 2 - Applied Astrology Studies
Out of all levels, this is the most important, and without it, you won't ever get anywhere. You need to be eating Charts for breakfast.
Analyze the charts of your friends, of famous people that have their natal data public (and even try to tweak natal charts for figures that don't have them), of anyone you know the life of on a more detailed level and whose birth data you know.
This should be regular and frequent. Notes should be taken on how each position, interaction etc. manifested. Natal Charts, major transits, reflecting at how the Natal Chart manifested at the point of the first Saturn Return, the second Saturn Return.
Level 3 - Astrological Concept Meditation
Astrology is quite the creative art, interpretation in general tends to be. Theory teaches a lot, seeing positions manifested in practice is essential. But a deeper understanding of each planet, house and sign can be gained through deep reflection.
Sit in contemplative meditation, laser focused on a concept like a sign.
Scorpio, for example. Picture a Scorpion and understand it. What do Scorpions behave like? Scorpions are subterranean dwellers, how does this manifest? Scorpions attack from hiding, what does this imply? Scorpio Sun falls in the deep Autumn, how does this connect? Scorpio is of Water, what spiritual concepts does water indicate, how do the two connect? The scorpion molts and regenerates, is this relevant?
For a planet, Mars. Mars deals with action, it is of fire and iron, what do these things draw your mind towards? Mars is the lesser malefic, it is training for war where Uranus is war's gruesome victims. How does a glorious, idealized war feel, the grand fight between good and evil? Taking action against entropy? How would different people (signs) see "struggle, effort"? Mars is governed by Ares, what do you know of Him?
You can even ponder two planets at once, or more, this deals with interactions. How does Mars relate to Uranus, its greater? How does it relate to Pluto? Is there a certain concordance between Mars and Venus? How does Mars lead into Saturn? etc.
For a house, let's take the 7th. The 7th is the opposite of the 1st, the "other". 7th House draws me towards the Lovers Tarot, or even the Two of Cups. It rules the kidneys, why? What do the kidneys have to do with partnerships?
These exercises of reflection can lead to interesting conclusions, notes should be taken and the conclusions scrutinized.
Level 4 - Applied Contemplation
Astrology gives a lot of context to other people, as well as to nations, eras of humanity, and so on. And yet, its most important aspect is that of helping guide your life.
You must live astrology to be an actually good astrologer, this level is one I am currently working on.
Take the time to study your own transits and chart, obviously, but do contemplate the planetary influences in your day to day life.
An important event happened today, see the chart and check the transit, why did it manifest this way? What exactly does that sign, that house, that interaction, mean?
It's Tuesday, you have extra free time, ponder the aspects of Mars in your life. See how your Mars sign made you see effort and action today.
It's Friday, go out of your way to do something related to the governance of Venus, then analyze it. Did the natal chart or the transit somehow affect your approach, behavior, opinion on what you did? Could you have done better?
