hey guys just wondering, whats up with the sphynx, its nose? did napolean blow it off? why?
 
Apparently that's true. He allowed his men to use it for target practice, of all thing!

but why the nose, i read that he blew it off because the nose and lips resembled that of a black man.

I hadn't heard that but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. This particular batch of ignoramuses was focused solely on conquest and had no respect for anything or anyone.

I read somewhere that the sphinx was actually a lion before it was carved down to the current shape (plus a nose) then the nose was blown off

Well it might have been a good answer, but it appears it may not have been true. LOL I was watching a special about the sphinx and the subject of Napoleon's troops shooting off its nose was raised. It seems an Arab chronicler (they either didn't give his name or I missed it) had remarked on the sphinx's missing nose 200 years BEFORE Napoleon showed up.

If that version is true, then we don't know how or why the nose disappeared; it could have been vandalism or the weather. The sphinx is made of two different types of limestone, one hard and the other, formed originally under water, much more porous. If the nose was sculpted from the porous kind, it's possible that erosion was at least partly to blame.
