The Pinocchio Effect:
I've noticed whenever I'm bullshitting myself (even for a split-second) I'll get an itch near the tip of my nose and instinctively reach over to scratch it.
This happens due to the blood vessels in the nose expanding and dilating as well as a temperature change in the same area.
The phenomenon is linked to the anxiety and mental effort involved in creating a deception, including self-deception, which triggers a stress response within the body causing blood vessels in the nasal region to dilate.
If you can get in the habit of noticing it when it happens, it can be a very useful indicator as to whether or not you're engaging in a form self deception, mental gymnastics, or simply not being honest with yourself about your true feelings, motivations or desires on a matter. For example, sacrificing your own will to appease someone else, when this is damaging to oneself.
And I'm sure there are many other uses, but overall, it can act as a general warning to rethink one's position on a matter.
It can even be useful for creative work. Noticing self-betrayal. Or when you're about to doing something you know you shouldn't be doing...
