On a personal note: My Mother had an abusive father. She tried to do something about it too. Then she, married my Father. He was abusive to me. My life was a lot worse than what you described. I can't describe it because I can't remember it. I remember at age 12, getting into a car with my Mother and Sister in order to escape from my Father. That was the last time I talked to my Mother. She worked all the time for about two years straight and my Father harassed her every week until she was nuts. After taking my Father for a drive in the country one day, he stopped talking to her and I stopped talking to him. At 14-years old I had to disconnect from my whole family because know one would believe me when I told them what he did to us. I learned what Xian really meant back then.
Find a Martial Arts studio that teaches "Jui-Jitsu", get your black belt and learn to shoot a firearm. It sounds like he is a danger to your kids. Tell your instructor all about it. Stay away from those parasitic wanna be doctors.
