While the "useless posers" answer is pretty much on the money, there
is a bit more to it you might find of interest.
Anton Szandor LeVay was an American who figured out a way to make a
living by writing (among other things) "The Satanic Bible", and
following up with founding the "Church of Satan". At the core of
LeVay's Americanised, commercialised brand of "Satanism" was the
denial of the actual existence of our Lord Satan. Instead LeVay held
that Satan was an attitude, or state of mind within the individual. A
"Claytons" Satanism, or Satanism Lite if you like, the Satanism you
have without Satan.
Thus we Spiritual / Theistic Satanists find this ...... 'just a bit
too silly' ......... to borrow from Monte Python.
LeVayan Satanists are also usually a bit on the homophobic side.
The only real purpose I have found LeVayan Satanism to serve is to
provide a bridge or way-station for those who no longer find either
xtianity or athiesm to be satisfactory.
Often these people will find LeVay's work to be sufficiently
non-confronting that they will take the time to explore it and become
more comfortable and conversant with various forms of Satanism along
the way. Its a place they can feel comfortable while they shed some of
their judeo-xtian programming and learn a form of Satanic lexicon,
even if it is slightly flawed. This then leads them to the
understanding that Satanism and indeed the Universe does not and
cannot make sense without the existence of Satan as a very real and
truly glorious deity.
