You said you always fall asleep? Well, make sure that you are not tired before you meditate or take a nap first.Before you meditate try thinking about it before you actually do it. And set your mind that you are going to meditate for an hour or more. That way your mind is in tune for meditation and you are not in a rush.
I am visual person myself, we have the same problem lol. I googled an image that i want to meditate on. And from that image i will stare at it for a couple minutes until i get that image on my mind. In the beginning i video myself, i turned off all the lights and i used a very bright flash light shinning on me as my miniature sun. I watch the video and that easiest way for me because i see myself in a complete darkness and only the miniature sun(flash light) shinning on me. I hope this would you, this is only my personal experience.
