Hello!

Do you have any advice on how to get rid of "dependence" on lip balm, hand and face lotion?

I've been dependent on lip balm since I was a kid, or else my lips they get dry and crack up.

Also without face lotion my face starts drying up, same with no lotion on my hands. With the hands it just get's worse and can become a problem. Same with my face, it can get seriously dry and cause problems for me.

Coconut oil. Works wonders for me. I used to be the same way, always putting on hand lotion and lip balm, but now that I only use coconut oil on my face and body I never have to put any lotion on. Hand stay soft throughout the day even after washing like a dozen times.

Dry lips are an indicator of Spleen qi deficiency, since the spleen is responsible for distributing the body fluids to the flesh.

Do you have symptoms like shortness of breath loose stools, tiredness, bloating, poor appetite and worsening of these symptoms upon exercising and bettering upon rest?

I sometimes have shortness of breath. Do you know how to increase the Spleen Qi?

Are there other things that could be in deficiency?

Yes other things could be deficient as well such as liver or heart blood an Spleen yang (if you get cold easily in addition to the Qi deficiency symptoms).

Spleen qi is used to digest food so avoiding difficult to digest and damp foods is a good start along with cold, raw and high sugar foods.

Foods which specifically improve Spleen qi include figs, cooked sweet potato and pumpkin, squash, sunflower seeds, rice congee with stewed green apple etc.

Herbs depend on what else is deficient and other factors but ginseng can improve Spleen qi however it can also increase qi stagnation and create stomach heat and Stomach yin deficiency so should be used with caution.

There are other more balanced herbal formulae which are safer than taking ginseng on its own.

Do you get other symptoms besides those mentioned for qi deficiency?

Thank you for the advice!

No I don't have any other symptoms.

Are the herbal formulas faster? Is there some place I can read about them?

No probs... Yes the herbal formulas can be faster but they need to be selected appropriate to your General body condition as those herbs which nourish Spleen qi also increase stomach heat so there is a careful balance which must be struck in order to appropriate it.

There are many Internet sources on Chinese herbs however they are subject often to practitioner's (mis)interpretation and without a basic knowledge of Chinese Medicine principles, on might find it difficult to understand the terminology.

A very basic website is yinyanghouse.com where you can search herbal formula by disharmony an sacredlotus.com offers a similar function.

However it is important to note that whilst these websites a useful they do not take into account coinciding factors and eliminating the causes of Spleen qi deficiency by diet and lifestyle changes is often gentler and better for you than copious amounts of herbs.

That said, one does not learn by simply being told and if you wish to try these formulas feel free, I am happy to advise you as necessary along the way should you require it.
