So I just got a job and stuff. I'll finally be able to do the things that I want, such as learn some martial arts. However, the place I'm looking at has extremely good ratings, very top notch teacher, and pretty decent pricing. BUT! Here's the catch, he's a very, VERY devout xtian. Now, if I went there and learned Kung Fu, I know that Father wouldn't be offended because I'm not there to learn about that foul religion, I'm there to learn the proper techniques to defend myself, and also be put in good physical condition. However my problem is, IDK if I want to learn from a teacher like that. I mean I feel like he may be preaching the whole time. Maybe I'll just take one class or something, test the energies in the room and see how he teaches. I don't know. What do you guys think?

Maybe take a class or two to feel the situation out. A persons religious path doesn't determine how good of a teacher/student they will be.Congrats on the job and so forth by the way.I studied the techniques and spirituality of Kung fu as a kid through my ex brother in law from Vietnam. The discipline and focus is amazing. Havent found anything to match it until I dedicated to Father and started the meditations.

This is true, there are too many of them. Im sure your boss is one too, but your not going to quit your job are you? You should be fine, unless he is one of those xians that feel they need to pray before every damn thing they do.

This is actually really odd, as I have recently been looking into taking a Kung Fu class here in my city. I've wanted to take a martial art for some time now to kind of be the "physical" aspect of energy manipulation, as meditation is the "mental". I too, just recently found out that the teacher of the class is a christian(not sure how hard core), but I found it a little odd since it's a very traditional school, but I guess we shouldn't be surprised to find this filth ANYWHERE. But yes, I would just take a few classes and see what kind of teacher he is!

You should be fine, but if I may make a suggestion. Kung Fu isn't really a self defense martial art, it was designed for show... I forget the martial art form that kung Fu stems from, but it was used in ancient china for war. Well anyways, I would suggest a different martial art for self defense, such as Systema, which is a Russian martial art used by Spetznas. Systema is known as the most effective fighting style in the world if I remember right... Only problem is the only dojo that teaches it is in Los Angeles, and it's only there for a few months a year, the rest of the time it's in Moscow Russia. But the teacher does travel and teach seminars on Systema quite a bit. Just google Systema Spetsnaz.

I looked into his website some more. He listed his requirements to be a black belt in one of his classes. And then I saw it. He requires them to put that foul god #1! For some strange reason I get the feeling his lessons will be a lot more religious than they should be. D:

Actually Kung Fu is one of the oldest fighting styles known to exist. It was created by monks in the original Shaolin temple, when the area around that temple began to fill with bandits and other people looking to rob the temple of anything valuable. The White Lotus Society were a sect of Monks who were the ONLY monks allowed to leave the temple and actually teach the art form to people who were not Buddhist, monks, or Chinese.

To be fair, in modern day practice, Kung Fu is NOT considered a "fighting style", even by most masters. It is a art form and a program for physical fitness, mental clarity, and discipline. And while I do believe that someone who has studied Kung Fu for years and attained the rank of Master would seriously fuck someone up out on the street if it came to it, Dante is correct when he states it isn't a "self-defense" system anymore. Bruce Lee actually studied Kung Fu as his original martial art, and created Jeet Kun Do because he found the rigid, preset forms and strikes to be inapplicable to a real street fight. (Further proving Dante's point.)

I however, am looking to study Kung Fu purely from a physical fitness and energy manipulation standpoint, as I believe the martial arts are the bridge between the mental abilities we unlock through power meditation, and the physical manifestation and use of that power. I am also especially interested in Kung Fu because both acupuncture and apothecary instruction are part of the training regime at the school I am thinking of attending. Qi Gong is actually ingrained in Kung Fu as well, and if anyone has seen John Chang - definitely worth learning. :D

Interesting! Kung Fu is beautiful to watch but I didn't know it wasn't a fighting style. I wonder if Systema Spetsnaz is adaptable for non-military, older, but reasonably fit women such as me. I see they have a series of DVDs ...
