From what I've read, it isn't necessary, but it's very dangerous. I'm not saying owie, that hurt dangerous, but catastrophic, possibly life threatening dangerous. Of course it depends on if you want to be a Satanist and just can't currently. If that's the case, then you should be fine, but I'm not entirely sure.
