I don't know how this works in other cultures, but in Russia there are quite a few. Growing up, I heard things like, for example, you shouldn't give a birthday present in advance, you shouldn't pass things across the threshold of a house or apartment, if you've said something you hope will happen, or you're happy that a bad situation has improved, you should knock on wood. There are hundreds, thousands of such things. They seem to be passed down from generation to generation, like superstition or something like that. Do these actions have any real meaning? I don't believe in them, but I observe some – it seems like it's not that difficult to do, and maybe it actually has some mystical, magical symbolism that provides some kind of protection, etc. (After all, our ancestors believed in this for many generations, etc.)
