There is not much of a difference with them but their uses are generally the same when it comes to transmitting and acting on certain energies. The more dense the crystal is, the more it changes. I have come to understand that quartz is just better for energy uses especially when it comes to storing and transmitting energy.
If you have a natural interest in the study and science of them, you should do research on that but I personally do not get to deep into it when it comes to the magickal uses because there is a small chance I will use crystals for magick because they have little power. Although, they can be useful when making charms, talismans, absorbing energy from things and empowering water when they are programmed. This is better if the crystal is at a decent size.
I do stick with clear quartz if I am to use any crystals. Some years ago, I did come across an article on quartz and why it is the best for energy use and how its chemical makeup supports this.
Crystals and gems are also used as radio transmitters and receivers and other related uses.
