Anything is possible; never put total reliance on media reports especially of that nature. It could be 100 percent correct; occasionally they are completely true; but often as not they're doctored or "spun", and others are outright fiction. The story "breaks", if it is something they can actually control, at the time it's most useful for PR and manipulation purposes. I try to stay reasonably up-to-date on affairs but my innate skeptic's antenna is always up.
However, it needs to also be said that when such momentous events occur, a plethora of conspiracy theories immediately come out of the woodwork, something also to be taken into consideration.

The media always lie to us. From the research that I have done, Bin Laden has been dead from since around December 2011. He died from lung problems. At least this is what I learned. What do you all think of this?
