AUM, the Sacred Mantra

Jagrat (the lower curve on the left) represents the waking state, beta brainwaves. Represents Brahma, and creation. In the human body it relates to the Brahma granthi and the pelvic floor diaphragm, and the relating Mulabandha. The sound is AAHH.

Swapna (the middle curve on the right) represents the dream state, theta brainwaves. Represents Vishnu, and preservation. In the human body it relates to the Vishnu granthi and the thoracic diaphragm, and the relating Uddiyana bandha. The sound is UUU or OOO, or a cross between these sounds.

Sushupti (the upper curve on the left) represents the deep sleep state, delta brainwaves. Represents Shiva, and destruction (in the sense of transformation, not annihilation). In the human body it relates to the Rudra granthi and the diaphragm of the brain, and Jalandhara bandha. The sound is MMM.

Turiya (the dot at the very top) represents Ananda, Samadhi; beyond the plane of consciousness. Absorption and reunion with Brahma (Zeus). It is the vibration after AUM, the sound within the silence after the mantra has been vibrated.

Maya (the curved line or semi-circle below Turiya) represents the world of illusion, separating us in our states of Jagrat, Swapna, and Sushupti, from Samadhi.

The sound A (pronounced Ah) is the first universal sound of beginning, the first moment of creation. This sound is made with your jaw, mouth, and tongue completely relaxed, and emanates from the region of the pelvis.

U and O are the next sound, representing continued creation. To make this sound it is required to put effort into shaping your mouth.

M is the final sound, representing the close, the end product of creation. To make this sound the mouth needs to be closed.

The Turiya is the sound within the silence after this mantra has been vibrated. If you vibrate this mantra to the state of bliss, you will understand the feeling of the sound within silence.

The continuous cycle of this full mantra means we are in life, we connect to the Divine, and we bring this connection back to life, then back to the Divine, an eternal cycle.

In yoga, the 3 sounds of AUM represent creation, preservation, and transformation.

Those who pronounce this sacred mantra as only OM are neglecting the first stage of creation.

Yoga Sutras 1.26-1.27:
sa pūrveṣām-api-guruḥ kālena-anavacchedāt
tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ

Unlimited by time, He [Ishwara, meaning God, Zeus] is the master of even the ancient teachers.
His word is Pranava [the name of AUM].

सोऽयमात्माध्यक्षरमौङ्कारोऽधिमात्रं पादा मात्रा
मात्राश्च पादा अकार उकार मकार इति ॥८॥

This identical Ātman, or Self, in the realm of sound is the syllable OM, the above described four quarters of the Self being identical with the components of the syllable, and the components of the syllable being identical with the four quarters of the Self. The components of the Syllable are A, U, M.

- Mandukya Upanishad, Verse 8

To feel the full effects of this mantra:

1. Vibrate the A (AAHH) beginning from the region of your pelvic floor up to the region of your navel. (Muladhara chakra to Manipura chakra.)

2. Vibrate the U (or O) from the region of your navel up to the region of your throat. (Manipura chakra to Vishuddha chakra.)

3. Vibrate the M from the region of your throat up to your mid-brain. (Vishuddha chakra to the Ajna chakra, to your Sahasrara chakra.)

Practice this a few times, until you can vibrate and feel AUM smoothly all the way from Muladhara to Sahasrara. Leave a few moments of silence in between each round for the representation of Turiya.

When visualizing, the mantra is not pushed up and out of the body. Think of the mercury in a thermometer, as the heat rises, the mercury rises but is still filling the temperatures below. This mantra empowers, not just passes through.

When you have finished, meditate on the sensation for as long as you’d like, and then re-ground to bring your awareness back into your physical body.

If you are meditating with a group of people, you can do what is called “a sea of AUMs”. Each individual vibrates the mantra at their own pace and their own vocal pitch. This creates a beautiful music, and helps unite the group in a sense of community.

Thank you High Priestess. I love knowing the practical connections these mantras have to our bodies and spirits. I'm looking forward to trying this out soon today.

May the Gods bless you. 🙏

Thank you, I'm adding this to my post so it is included in the Library.

Thank you, Divine High Priestess Lydia Coventina, for sharing this profound teaching on AUM and its connection to our chakras and states of consciousness.
The way you explained the practical vibrational path through the body, and the link to the ancient scriptures, makes the mantra feel much more alive and accessible.
I’m grateful for the clarity and depth.

Thank you very much High Priestess Lydia Coventina. Now the vibration of the transcendental universal sound AUM in the proper way can be felt to the fullest. May our Gods and Goddesses bless you. We are forever thankful for the guidance from you all our leaders and your relentless efforts to see us advance in the proper way laid down by our Gods. We thank our Gods and Goddesses for their guidance and protection of the Temple of Zeus and all rank and file.
Hail Father Zeus
Hail Mama Aphrodite
Hail all our Gods and Goddesses forever

I made a post on how the three letters of AUM can also symbolize the three gunas, the tripartite nature of Zeus, the Trident of Poseidon, or Trishula of Shiva, and the subatomic particles that form an atom.

I appreciate your insights on this very important mantra. It will be useful in my practice to use this mantra in the correct manner. Thank you, High Priestess Lydia Coventina. Be blessed!
