It is a very common thing for words to change their spelling in different places and different times.
I think this is backwards, but I agree there is probably a connection. I think they named themselves after jewels, just like they very frequently name themselves after money. Gold, Silver, Ruby, Green, and other forms of money or jewels are very frequently part of their names.
