The Term "Nazi"

Hello All,
I read about the nazis here often, yet, I thought that this was a derogatory term invented by the allies (All-Lies) after WWII to defame and ridicule the Germans. My understanding is that the proud women and men fighting for justice and peace would never have called themselves other than that: National Socialists. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I think Dennis Wise mentioned that this term was a slur in his documentary TGSNT. I am not 100% sure though. Just want to be careful with my language as so much of our language has been corrupted.
