"The name Lucifer originally denotes the planet Venus (Color: Red/White), emphasizing its brilliance. The Vulgate employs the word also for "the light of the morning" (Job 11:17), "the signs of the zodiac" (Job 38:32), and "the aurora" (Psalm 109:3). Metaphorically, the word is applied to the King of Babylon (Isaiah 14:12) as preeminent among the princes of his time; to the high priest Simon son of Onias (Ecclesiasticus 50:6), for his surpassing virtue, to the glory of heaven (Apocalypse 2:28), by reason of its excellency; finally to Jesus Christ himself (2 Peter 1:19; Apocalypse 22:16; the "Exultet" of Holy Saturday) the true light of our spiritual life." New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia

"Second Peter12:19 "And we have the more firm prophetical word: whereunto you do well to attend, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn and the day stararise (Lucifer) in your hearts.
Job 11:17 And brightness like that of the noonday, shall arise to thee at evening: and when thou shalt think thyself consumed, thou shalt rise as the day star (Morning Star/Lucifer)." King James Bible

Why Lucifer? In Roman astronomy, Lucifer was the name given to the morning star (the star we now know by another Roman name, Venus). The morning star appears in the heavens just before dawn, heralding the rising sun. The name derives from the Latin term lucem ferre, bringer, or bearer, of light." In the Hebrew text the expression used to describe the Babylonian king before his death is Helal, son of Shahar, which can best be translated as "Day star, son of the Dawn." The name evokes the golden glitter of a proud king's dress and court (much as his personal splendor earned for King Louis XIV of France the appellation, "The Sun King").

"Lucifer represents.. Life.. Thought.. Progress.. Civilization.. Liberty.. Independence.. Lucifer is the Logos.. the Serpent, the Savior."
— Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (The Secret Doctrine)

To occultists and New Agers, the symbology of Arthur C. Clarke's writing was unmistakable. Lucifer, the "light bearer" shines his knowledge (occult "truth") upon all humanity, chasing away fear and ignorance, and providing mankind with the opportunity to discover his own intellect.

In Clarke's Lucifer Rising story line, the hydrogen atmosphere on the planet Jupiter is ignited. The ensuing new "little" sun is dubbed "Lucifer" and illuminates the earth with its light. The result: darkness no longer existed. Fear, suspicion, and crimes of the night disappear. Mankind has become illuminated through the light of Lucifer.

The Phosphorus Connection
In 1669 the Hamburg merchant and alchemist Hennig Brandt heated the residue from evaporating urine with powdered charcoal, and condensed the vapor that was evolved into a waxy solid. This solid glowed in the dark, without heat, an astonishing phenomenon. He called the mysterious substance phosphorus, taken directly from the Greek phosphoros, "light-bringer." This was also the name of the planet Venus as morning star, "Lucifer" in Latin. The discovery created quite a stir, and soon nobody was throwing away urine. Travelling alchemists amazed royal audiences, and it was the talk of the time. A normal person excretes about a gram of phosphorus daily.

For a long time now i have been fascinated with the Planet Venus after i discovered that the Planet makes a pentacle, Pentagram or 5 pointed star when Earth and Venus are at there closests points when they revolve around the sun.
The Pentagram or Pentacle goes back 1000's of years and the amazing Pythagoreans were one of the first people to use it, but before that the Egyptians and Babylonians were using it:

In Babylon, five-, six- and seven-rayed stars were all used. The pentagram appears in the earliest writing of Mesopotamia (precuneiform pictographic writing), c. 3000 BCE, as the Sumerian sign UB. Its meaning in the cuneiform period (by 2600 BCE) seems to be a Heavenly Quarter and also the four directions (forward, backward, left, right); the fifth direction was "above."

Pythagoras may have become acquainted with the Pentagram during his sojourns in Egypt and Babylon (perhaps 554-533 BCE); in any case the Pythagoreans used it as a sign of recognition

There are three aspects, or origins, of the pentacle star. The macro -- that is, cosmic, aspect is discussed on this page and issues from two concentic orbits (rings). The micro aspect has two sources: 1] The electron's orbitals in an atom, in which case the pentacle issues from the exact division of a single circle I call the classic pentacle; and 2] the electron's orbitals in a molecule, in which case the pentacle issues from two non-concentric but interlocked circles/rings I dubbed the hyperstar pentacle.

What then is the practical difference between the pentacle and the pentagram? The pentacle has rings showing the origin -- either atomic (single circle), cosmic (two concentric circles), or hyperstar (non-concentric circles). In the end and once the mechanics of the various orbitals (circles) are engaged the result is the pentagram. So, technically, the pentagram is sufficient if you know where it comes from. However, a circle is the delimiter of context and to a practicioner it may be important to show or draw the circles to differentiate the origin of the resulting pentagram.
