No they don't it's a myth. Werewolves are traditionally the bad guys which is odd to me because the concept isn't inherently evil like vampires, it's just a human that also happens to be wolf-like.

I personally believe that Lycanthropy is a real thing. I don't think it is a "curse" or some "transfer of a disease when bitten" type thing like they show in the movies. The ancient Luceres tribe of Rome are believed to be werewolves. There are werewolf legends everywhere in history across many cultures and traditions that most likely never even had any contact with eachother, so why can't they be real?

Pipur, a myth appearing in many corners of the globe doesn't make it literal. The myths of creation and destruction of the world appear everywhere too, such as ragnarok, the kali yuga and the aztec 5 worlds for example, but that doesn't mean they are anything more than spiritual allegories. Which in all likelyhood, werewolves are in the league of, along with mermaids, satyrs and other such human-animal hybrids.

Besides, it doesn't make sense how such a thing could even be biologically possible. Even the mimic octopus, which is the nearest thing to a shapeshifter I know of in nature, as many forms, textures and colors as it can imitate, is only ever going to be an octopus. It's not like it can alter its genetic code at a whim and suddenly grow bones to become a barracuda or something.

Now, I'm not saying that large changes through biokinesis can't be done with sufficient power and spiritual development, but the possibility of changing your body into something beyond the capabilities within its natural, racial blueprint is highly questionable to me. And whether you would want to, not knowing what kind of consequences that would bring... 


As for what shapeshifting is, I'm thinking it refers to altering your image on the astral. Suppose that you wanted to deter some entities from harassing you, if you had the skill of shapeshifting then you could transform your image into some terrifying monster. Or blow yourself up like a pufferfish. This wouldn't change your literal genetic makeup, only how your image is percieved by others, which makes this form of shapeshifting plausible at the very least. It seems kinda like how cloaking technology is theorized to work, bending light around an object to hide it from outside observers, only we're bending the light in such a way as to create a new image entirely. More like holography in that sense.


Or maybe I'm just a killjoy with no imagination. Either way, it's an interesting topic.
