On the JoS rune section, it says that the Nauthiz rune is connected to the Hagl rune. Could someone please explain how the two are connected?

Nauthiz pertains to avoiding disaster through hard work. This relates to our stress response, and that is why Saturn (the associated planet) is connected to hardship. However, these energies ultimately teach us to avoid disaster, and that is a good thing.

Hagl is also connected to a crisis situation, but pertains more to the manifestation of karma, both good and bad. It is the crisis which presents an opportunity for positive change. Nauthiz is the next rune in the order and would therefore relate more to actions taken as a result of the pain caused by Hagl.

Both of these runes pertain to dealing with unavoidable circumstances or obstacles, which relates to being realistic and grounded in our behavior. Nauthiz pertains to the hard work involved, whereas Hagl pertains to the pain and subsequent growth, leading to a more perfect state of being, once the problems which are present are dealt with.

For example, Hagl may cause a cigarette smoker to develop a coughing fit, cancer, or other negative situation. This then creates a crisis which must be resolved. Nauthiz establishes the discipline and may make the individual get totally serious about the situation. They would then put forth the consistent effort to break their cigarette addiction and heal themselves, therefore becoming a better person in the end.

With Hagl, we may not improve. Without Nauthiz, we may break down and fall victim to the negativity which we have to overcome. If the above individual lost their mind from stress, they would've died or suffered even more.

I believe both of these runes are relevant to Saturn. We also know that a degree of perfection is required for material manifestation. If a building has a serious problem, then it will collapse. That is why Saturn wants to test things over and over until it gets it right.

Thank you for the clarification. Could you explain how a 90 day working involving these two runes look like? Would you vibrate Hagl 9 times, Nauthiz 10 times, and then state your affirmation 9 times? Or would you vibrate Nauthiz and Hagl the same number of times? I’m not too familiar with runes as I’ve been more of a Sanskrit person.

As far as affirmations go, what would you recommend from both a white magick and a black magick perspective? I understand Hagl is mainly used for black magick. I’m interested in a working involving both of these runes.

I would not use Hagl unless you want to invite harsh circumstances. I believe Nauthiz captures the actual response/solution that many people require, without inviting disaster. Start with a Nauthiz working and see if this gives the results you want before incorporating Hagl.

When working with multiple runes of any kind, the simplest way is just to do each the same amount of time. I prefer to alternate chanting them up to a number, with the number of reps being a power number that reflects either the Rune number or is generally related to advancement, like 40.

Reps of the affirmation should be based on this info: https://www.ancient-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=74710

Whether you vibrate one rune more than the other depends on how much you believe you need of certain energies. Usually it is easiest to just do an equal amount.

If you intend any of these energies for constructive purposes, then it is white magic. More on affirmations here: https://www.ancient-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=81236&p=412474#p412474

Remember to start on the best date for your working.
