Question #5730: What does Mula Bandha mean?

In the Kundalini Yoga PDF. I don't get it. I searched online and it said you "lock" the chakra? What is the purpose of doing that? Do I say anything in my mind or just intend to "lock" the chakra? Do I visualise anything?

Bandhas

Uddiyana Bandha = stomach lock, abdomen sucked in, breath exhaled
Jalandhara Bandha = chin lock, chin is drawn down to the base of the throat
Mula Bandha = root lock, contraction of the perineum muscles
