I wonder if it still works without doing the affirmations? Maybe not?

This is foolhardy because he is not doing protection meditation nor cleaning. Plus your ritual was not complete (=waste of energy).

You might want to take another approach where knowledge is shared first and basic meditation routine is established. Rushing to spiritual warfare is not so good idea.

It's not dangerous so long as you have dedicated and under protection of the Gods

The dedication ritual does not automatically grant ultimate protection from all harm all the time, in other words, all-encompassing protection. While it is true that one does get protection depending on their current level and general good-will from Gods it is not true when one, for example, plays with fire or does something similar where responsibility and knowledge do protect from self-harm; Such as by engaging in practices that are a unsafe or doing something irresponsible.

After all, we are supposed to grow by our own efforts, which is why we do aura of protection and cleaning mediations, for example. Otherwise, we would not grow.

In the case of OP, there is a clear lack of understanding and also a lack of perspective on when and how things should be approached. While protection from Gods can easily deal with any potential harm coming their way, the question arises: Should they help just because they can, or should they let something (that these people can handle) happen so that the persons in question learn something from it?
