Question #1143: yehuborim forbidden.to read their Torah under penalty of death?

Is it true that when Italy was under quote/unquote "pagan" rule that the yehuborim were forbidden to read their Torah in their synagogues under penalty of death? If true the Italians must have had some strong feelings about it.
