Possibly a very dumb question

Hello everyone. I was wondering about the athame for my altar. The only good knife I have is a handmade butterfly knife from overseas. It's all silver and very good quality, but I am afraid it may be tacky to Father. Also, the athame can only be used for rituals, am I right? I like to play with it in my spare time. If so, any suggestions where on athame suppliers?

On the JoS site, under links, there is one to an online supply store. There is also a fairly good selection at www(dot)azuregreen(dot)com. I get a lot of my candles, incense, etc. from them. I haven't tried the other store posted on the JoS site yet, so I can't say as to their items.

I bought mine used from a knife seller. I simply did a purification ritual for mine, purifying it under the elements.

Yes, it is recommended that an athame is used for ritual purposes only. However if I ever had to use mine as a weapon for self defense I would not hesitate.

You can find some really nice daggers at great prices at: http://www.thecollectorsedge.com, even traditional black hilted ones with a double edged blade. Give abaxion.com a try too, a little more expensive but some nice selections, yes they carry a lot of RHP type stuff too, but its what you do with the tool once you get it that matters, an athame dedicated to Satan is a "Satanic tool" no if , ands, or buts. In the mean time use what you have, in the long run its nice and in my opinion respectful to invest in top quality altar tools, you will get a life time of use from them and their beauty and craftsmanship will always be an inspiration.
