Nama or Svaha for this Venus square

Crystal1 min to read

I’m planning on starting a Venus square August 21st. I had a question that’s baffling me. It’s probably a simple answer but what mantra would we use for love. I don’t know if love would be considered a material or a spiritual matter. So I don’t know if I vibrate Nama or Saha.. My brain would consider to be both but I’m just overthinking it.

It depends on your goal. You said it was for love, but this isn't enough. For example, you may do a Venus Square to help you find a suitable partner, and this would work in the material realm, thus Namah. Or, you may do the Square for expanding your love perception, love issues, or anything more abstract and spiritual, and this would be Svaha.

Think about whether the target of your working is in the material or spiritual realm.

Hey Crystal, you are not overthinking it at all. You have actually landed on something important. Love sits right across the line between material and spiritual aims, which is exactly why the question feels like a puzzle in the first place.

The Venus 1225 page on the Temple of Zeus site lays it out plainly. The mantra given is AUM DRAAM DRIM DRAUM SAU SHUKRAYA NAMA, and the page adds this rule: "One can replace NAMA with SVAHA [S-V-AH-HAH] when working for spiritual goals." Read that carefully. The default ending is NAMA, which is associated with material success, prosperity, and earthly non-spiritual affairs. SVAHA is the swap you make when the aim is chakra empowerment, strengthening a debilitated Venus, health, and overall spiritual advancement related to Venus. So the closing syllable is not arbitrary. It is part of how the working is programmed.

Now, here is where it gets interesting, and where your instinct is correct. When High Priest Zevios Metathronos has answered similar questions on the forums, he has made it clear the two are interchangeable in practice. In this reply on the Necronomicon Meditations thread he wrote, "NAMA and SVAHA can be replaced with one another. However, I am uncertain at what mantra you might have found. Try them both and see what works best." And in a follow-up on the wealth mantra, he said, "Due to the nature of this mantra, it's based on also developing in an inner way spiritually in regards to wealth. Therefore, SVAHA is advised... Both will be successful, so don't worry about this if you done it with NAMA. It works." That last line is worth holding onto. You cannot really mess this up.

So how do you choose? Ask yourself one honest question before you start. What is the core of what I want from this working? If your aim is, "I want to attract love into my life," meaning a tangible relationship, a real person, harmony you can feel in your days, then NAMA fits because the working is pointed outward toward the material. If your aim leans more toward, "I want to heal my heart chakra, open myself to love, become the kind of person who can truly receive and give love," then SVAHA is the better fit, because the High Priest's own framing of the wealth mantra shows that when the working also develops you inwardly alongside the outer result, SVAHA is advised. Many practitioners frame love as the latter, especially when past pain is part of the picture, and that is exactly the case the High Priest described as SVAHA being the right closing syllable.

The fact that both work means you are not picking the wrong key. Think of it like a key with two compatible heads. One opens the door from the outside, the other from the inside, but they both turn the same lock.

Once you have chosen, stay with that ending for the full 49 days. The Temple guidance on the Venus page is clear that you cannot switch halfway through, so pick your aim, settle in, and let it build. If you go with NAMA, the full mantra is AUM DRAAM DRIM DRAUM SAU SHUKRAYA NAMA. If you go with SVAHA, it becomes AUM DRAAM DRIM DRAUM SAU SHUKRAYA SVAHA. Pronunciation matters too. Roll the R's, hold the AH and UUU vowels in your chest and throat, and treat each syllable as something you are vibrating, not just saying. The Temple's Yogic Humming Breath page explains the mechanism in a single line worth memorizing: "Mantras should always be vibrated, NEVER just spoken as words. Each syllable of a mantra should be vibrated. It is in the vibration that sacred words and names manifest their power."

One more thing worth checking before August 21st. Double-check that the date is actually a Friday in your timezone, that it falls in a Venus hour, and that Venus is direct and well-placed, ideally in Taurus, Libra, or Pisces, and definitely not in Virgo, Scorpio, or Aries, since those are Venus's fall and detriment. Also confirm the Moon is not void of course that day, since void moon starts are discouraged. If any of those conditions are off, it is much better to wait for the next good window than to force it. High Priestess Lydia Coventina's Venus Retrograde write-up and the Temple's Timing Your Magick with the Planets page both drive home how much timing matters for Venus work. Love spells begun under a retrograde or weak Venus tend to fizzle or backfire, so a small delay is worth far more than a botched start.

Hail Zeus, and blessings on the working.

Thank you! That was very informative. I’ll choose Nama. I checked August 21st and it’s about the only day that will work to start. It’s a waxing moon, moon is not void of course, it’s a Friday, Venus enters Libra, and I’ll do it during Venus hr. So I think I’ve covered that pretty good. Thank you again!

Do we just have to make sure Venus is not in retrograde correct?

And that the moon is not void at the hour you begin.

And that Venus is in its strong signs, otherwise you will be wasting time for little power.

The easiest way to see if you can do a Venus square is to check our Zevist calendar accessible on the HoO platform.

In general, you make sure it's also not in detriment [Scorpio/Aries] nor in fall [Virgo].

Retrograde imo is fine if you're doing internal work (i.e. the spiritual version of the square).

Looking at the 21st of August, it is a good date for all intents and purposes of the square because Venus is in Libra starting early August.

Venus squares can be done from the 7th of August all the way to the 4th of September 2026. Before that week, it should be avoided because Venus is in Virgo [fall] and after that week it should be avoided because Venus will be in Scorpio [detriment].

I'm not sure how much experience you have in meditation and energy works, but I would like to remind you that all forms of magick require you to have your foundations consolidated, foundations such as:

Not having consolidated the foundations doesn't mean you won't have success in magick, as everybody comes with different individual levels of advancement, but it's best to always consider this when you are a newcomer to the path. Best of luck!

Apart from what SG HiddenWarrior said, the spiritual square (SVAHA) is also advantageous if:

  • your natal Venus is placed in your 5th or 7th house

  • you have Libra or Taurus on the cusp of your natal 5th or 7th house

  • your natal Venus is weak or debilitated (because a weak/debilitated Venus affects our ability to connect to others alongside Mercury, and your love life in general)

Spiritual matter -> What concerns the incorporeal; emotions, situations, luck, spiritual things. The idea, desire or having of a mirror = Spiritual.

Physical matter -> What concerns the material, consolidations of matters, manifestation. The actual mirror in your room = Physical.

Example: Opening up and being more perceptive of love affairs = Spiritual. Actually having a lover or engagement in a different life related situation = Material.

Must clearly define the goal. If you cannot define it, use spiritual.

If you cannot, use either. The energy will find the way based on the goal you set.
