Mars Retrograde – Upcoming Transit

AvatarHigh Priestess Lydia Coventina4 min to read

Mars goes retrograde (appearing to travel backwards in relation to our location on Earth) once every approximately 2 years and 2 months, and it lasts for approximately 10 weeks. (For those of you who enjoy patterns, that makes a 2-2-2-2; every 2 years and 2 months for 2 months and 2 weeks.)

When Mars is transiting in Direct motion through your houses, it normally doesn’t have any effects, unless it is your natal chart ruler.

But when it goes Retrograde (Rx), you need to look for the house it retrogrades through, and the degree it stations on before Rx and the degree it stations on when it stops retrograding and turns direct. “The degree it stations on” refers to a period of time when a planet stops moving (stationing, staying still) before turning direct or retrograde, and the degree of the zodiac it is on.

In general, the affairs ruled by the house Mars is retrograding through can have problems, such as finances if it’s through the 2nd house, and so on. Don’t panic, it rarely results in catastrophe. I am writing this guide so you know what to look for, and what to be aware of.

There are also certain aspects where it can be problematic:

-If it is retrograding through your 6th house, there can be health issues or physical accidents resulting in injury, either minor or major.

-If it stations before going Rx in tight aspect to your 6th house ruler, there can be a health issue or accident. I have seen this in the transits for a person who was diagnosed with cancer (he was treated quickly and is fine now).

Normally, it’s all fine, nothing to worry about, you likely don’t even notice it most of the time. But this period coming up, you might need to watch out, because it stations on 6 degrees which is a bad degree. In general, keeping up your daily aura/chakra cleaning and aura of protection, and raising your energies every day with meditation and yoga, will negate most of this energy.

Mars goes Rx on December 7, and remains there until February 24. It reaches 6 degrees of Leo on December 1, and remains on this malefic degree until December 12.

Look at your natal chart, find where 6 degrees of Leo is, the house it is in. This is the house of your natal chart where Mars will impact. Mars will retrograde to 17 degrees of Cancer, so if it goes back through the previous house, then that house is also affected. Just look at your natal chart, find those degrees, and you will determine where Mars will travel backwards, from 6 Leo to 17 Cancer, so you can see what house/s Mars will be in.

Now look to see if you have any natal planets that aspect 6 degrees of Leo, preferably in:
-conjunction (6 Leo),
-opposition (6 Aquarius),
-square (6 Taurus, 6 Scorpio),
-trine (6 Aries, 6 Sagittarius),
-inconjunction (6 Capricorn, 6 Pisces);

and also:
-semi-square (21 degrees of Virgo, 21 degrees of Gemini),
-sesi-square (21 degrees of Sagittarius, 21 degrees of Pisces),
-sextile (6 Gemini, 6 Libra).

You can broaden the orb up to 8 degrees for the major aspects but it’s generally within 5 degrees, and look at the houses these planets rule in your chart.

With astrology, exact degrees are very important when it comes to fate. If Mars station/Rx will be in, for example, 5 degree orb of a natal planet, that’s generally not fate. Probably nothing major will happen, but the energy can still be bad and perhaps cause something bad to happen. But if things line up on the same degree, and/or other planets are tightly linked in, that’s when fated events are shown. For the person I mentioned above who had cancer, Mars had stationed under 1 degree (by square) to his 6th house ruler.

And as with all transits, look to your Solar Return as well. If your SR looks good overall, then this Mars Rx period likely isn’t anything to worry about.

Thank you, HPS Lydia. This will help to prepare accordingly, just in case.

No, your working is fine, and can be continued through the retrograde period.

While we're on the topic, in case anyone else asks, for workings during Mars Rx:

"With Mars retrograde, this is not the time to perform spells of revenge or violence/black magick. They can rebound and backfire, as the universe is working in reverse. Spells for bringing peace and harmony, as in one's family are aided at this time. Wait until the retrograde period is over with."

This transit seems like it will be really hard on someone I care about. Do you have any advice for helping them through? I don't have their full chart, it's without birth time, so I don't know how exactly it will manifest.

How would it affect our day to day lives?

I remember Mars retro causing all types of arguments, fights, rage, etc.

I remember getting seriously agitated all the time during this.

It honestly depends on the individual. Usually Mars RX won't even be noticed much, perhaps some agitation. As for arguments, it may have been aspecting your natal Mercury.

You can do a working for peace and harmony among the people in your life, such as using Green energy in your home, or invoking Green energy into your aura before meeting with friends. Sananda (sanskrit for joy) will also be useful in the home, workplace, etc.

This transit seems like it will be really hard on someone I care about. Do you have any advice for helping them through? I don't have their full chart, it's without birth time, so I don't know how exactly it will manifest.

If the person is into spirituality, you can guide them to breathing exercises, yoga, etc to raise their energy and aura cleaning.

If they're not, you can clean their aura for them. I did that for some years for my loved ones. But there's only so much we can do for others. Some basic sweeping of light is easy enough and helps overall, and doesn't take much time.

It's not about where your natal Mars is, but where transiting Mars will be. If Mars will be retrograding through your 9th house, there can be problems with foreigners, vacations, higher education, in-laws, grandparents.

Thank you HPS LYDIA for the clarification. I'm decent when it comes to astrology but I'm not the best. The whole aspecting thing is a little confusing to me still. It's new to me. I know this may sound like a dumb question, but im asking to at least learn from one of the best...how do I figure out where it'll be apsecting? Between both my pluto and Mars in my own chart. Lowkey these both make me a little nervous when they start coming into play in present time esp what happened last time. So this is also something I want to look deeper into to make sure im good. Last retrograde lots of close people around me died from things that didn't even make sense.

I know, astrology can be overwhelming. There will be more posts in the future to help explain things.

Unfortunately is currently down [edit, is now back up], it will be fixed soon. But you can use other sites that generate transits, and you can use it to see aspects from transiting Mars to your natal planets. I actually don't know of the best one, so if another member can answer, this would be helpful, and I will update my post with it.

Time Passages app on android and iPhone shows current transits (just for the current week, so you will have to keep checking weekly) for free, and for a fee you can see more transits.

But in the meantime, you can manually check, this is what I do. See it on JoS-Astro and do the mental math and calculations, which can take some getting used to.

Sorry to hear about the deaths of the people close to you. I also had a time where a lot of people died suddenly and randomly.

Wonderful! I just saw the new update for Jos Astro, and it now includes a Planetary Hours feature! :D

This autumn is the autumn of retrograde planets.

«You will find on the left of the halls of Hades a spring, and standing by it a white cypress. Do not approach this spring at all. You will find another, from the Lake of Memory, with cold water flowing from it. Guardians stand before it. Say: 'I am a child of Earth and starry Heaven, but my race is of Heaven alone. You know this yourselves. I am parched with thirst and am perishing. Give me quickly the cold water flowing from the Lake of Memory.' And they will give you to drink from the sacred spring, and after that you will reign among the other heroes» - From the Petelia Tablet (300-200 BCE)

I'll have to wait until December 7th, I was just planning to start working with black magic against one bastard.

Do it before the 7th, because it can't be done while Mars is Rx. Otherwise you'll have to wait until the end of February.

Lydia, thank you. I read it incorrectly, I will do it before December 7th.

Sister Hps Lydia During this time period what workings can we do?
Can we do return curses?
And can we do the Lakshmi money working along side the Ganesha working?
