This is from a book I have; "Qi Gong for Beginners - Eight Easy Movements for Vibrant Health" by Stanley D Wilson, Ph.D
"According to chinese folklore, Chong Li-Quan, a general in the chinese army during the Han dynasty, was one of the first to learn and master Ba Duan Jin. As the story goes, Chong, who was intent on expanding the national territory of China, suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the rival Tibetans. Rather than return to Beijing and face the wrath of the Emperor, Chong went into hiding in the mountains of southern China. There he became the student of an enlightened Taoist who taught him Qi Gong methods to cultivate the elixirs of life (substances that bestow immortality) that reside in the body. One of these methods was Ba Duan Jin. After learning to live in perfect harmony with nature, Chong became one of the Eight immortals (or Eight old ones) of traditional Chinese mythology. Before his death, he diagrammed the sequence of eight exercises on the walls of a cave that was discovered several centuries later by another Chinese general, Lu Dong Bin. General Lu Dong Bin also mastered the exercises and became one of the eight old ones."
