focus on the here and now

I read on JoS, that for void meditation i should make my mind free of any thoughts, and than focus on here and now. I make my mind free of any thoughts, but than i dont know how to focus on the here and now. Can someone explain please?

Basically, pick an object or area to focus upon and do not think or visualise anything, just focus on that object or area.
