Greetings brothers and sisters!
I made a drawing that charts the major points of Mian Xiang, the Chinese art of face mapping / reading. These points are the 100 ‘ages’ of your face, specific energy points. I haven’t seen a map like this before, so take mine with a grain of salt (I love fractals if you can’t tell by my art style.) I am not a professional, I am self-taught. I’d like to post it for anyone who is also researching this topic, but especially for those who aren’t aware of this practice. Essentially, there is a way to read somebody’s fortune, story, and imbalances through carefully analyzing their facial features and expressions. Feel free to download this image, overlay it with your face, or simply use it as a point of reference when analyzing your face. For those of you who want a brief self-guide on how to read your face, here you go:
Get somebody to take a photo of you, or (less preferably,) set up a phone /camera yourself. Either way, ensure that you’re a short distance away from the camera. We don’t want a selfie; your phone is too close to your face and distorts it. Ensure that you’re facing the camera completely, and that you haven’t positioned the phone at a drastic angle. We want to get rid of any perspective bias here. Note; natural lighting is the best for this. Maintain a relaxed facial expression.
Now that you have a good photo to work from (this is so much easier than looking in the mirror, in my opinion), it’s time to analyze your face. You may even edit the photo for clarity, raising the contrast or altering the light focus.
When you look into your eyes, do they appear full of life? Or are they sunken, puffy, or lifeless? Your eyes contain the great, middle, and lesser points of yin and yang on the face. Asymmetries or issues here reflect these energies. What do I mean by yin and yang? These are the contrasting forces of energy; yin is feminine, cold, stasis, inner, heavy, and yang is masculine, hot, motion, outer, light. The left side is considered yin, the right side is considered yang. Sometimes when I’m analyzing a part of the face that I see often, like my eyes, I will turn my phone or rotate the image upside down to literally gain a new perspective. It can be easier to tell that way if your eyes droop downwards or raise upwards.
Do you have any lines on your face? Unless you don’t make any expressions, I’d be pretty surprised if you don’t have any. Lines are records carved into our skin of gestures that we make on a daily basis. Do you constantly get angry? You might frown often, creating downward lines around your mouth and chin, with lines furrowing into your eyebrows. You might smile often, raising your eyebrows and cheeks and lifting your face. You might make expressions that are subconscious. These all shape your face. Imagine that your physical flesh is clay; you are the sculptor of your face. Each experience, influence, and habit is etched into your face. Remember this when you react, when your emotions take over your face.
Does pigment or acne accumulate in any part of your face? Do you have any moles (dark/pigmented, raised circles)? These may reflect blockages of chi (energy), and they may connect to a certain ailment or imbalance that is connected to that point. It doesn’t always connect to that literal area of your body; meridians run through our bodies, connected disparate parts of you through horizontal lines of energy. These may be physical manifestations of energy that cannot flow freely.
Is your face somewhat symmetrical, or do you notice certain features that differ drastically from each other? As a general rule, we find harmony beautiful, and symmetry is perfection. While an extremely symmetrical face isn’t necessarily attainable, noticing these asymmetries can show where you’re lacking in balance on your face. Using your photo, consider zooming in and screenshotting each half of your face to compare them separately. Do these halves look like two completely different people? Are they making opposite expressions? Does one side smile while the other frowns? Your yin and yang energies may be imbalanced, and it has manifested physically.
There’s so much more I’d love to talk about for this topic, but I’ll end here to not overwhelm anyone too much. I’d love to start a conversation or answer any questions that may come up. Does anyone else know about this topic? I’d love to learn more. Thank you to Aristotle for inspiring my research.
