Doesn't make sense...?

Iv been thinking about this for a while, and I haven't really come up with anything.
Why does the bible tell of all these rotten horrible things, when its purpose is to convince people that there's an all loving benevolent god? As spiritual Zevists have proven simply by being spiritual Zevists, wouldn't that only serve to be counter productive?
I find it a major flaw if one religion can base their arguments against another by their own books. It doesn't make any sense why the creators of the bible would stick things in there that would push people away from it....?
Could I please be enlightened? (If there's some obvious fact that i missed and invalidates my whole argument, feel free to tell me) :p
Thanks!

Most people don't see through the spell. It's been working quite well the latest 2000 years, huh?
