It took 4 years, but it finally happened.

With little fanfare, the United Kingdom officially left the European Union on Friday, entering into a period of uncertainty after three years of opposing identity politics over Brexit and tense negotiations.

The departure became official at 11 p.m. in Brussels, where the EU is headquartered. Thousands of Brexit supporters waving Union Jack flags gathered outside Britain's Parliament to celebrate the severing of the 47-year relationship.

A recording of Big Ben sounded out as Brexit became official, prompting crowds to sing the British national anthem, "God Save the Queen."

Brexit supporters had been looking forward to the exit since 52 percent of Britain voted in June 2016 to walk away from the EU, which it joined in 1973. Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the departure “a moment of real national renewal and change.”

“This is the single most important moment in the modern history of our great nation,” Nigel Farage, leader of the Brexit Party, told the crowd.

Some mourned the loss of their EU identity, with several vigils being held across the UK. Ann Jones joined dozens of other remainers on a march to the EU’s mission in London.

“Many of us want to just mark our sadness in public,” she said.

Candlelight vigils were held in several Scottish cities, government buildings in Edinburgh were lit up in the EU’s blue and yellow, and the bloc’s flag continued to fly outside the Scottish Parliament.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Brexit was “a moment of profound sadness.”

There was also sadness in Brussels as British flags were quietly removed from the bloc’s many buildings, before being folded and taken away.

French President Emmanuel Macron called Brexit a “historic alarm signal” that should force the EU to improve itself.

“It’s a sad day, let’s not hide it,” he said in a televised address. “But it is a day that must also lead us to do things differently.”

Johnson, who won a December election victory with his promise to get Brexit done, insisted post-Brexit Britain would be “simultaneously a great European power and truly global in our range and ambitions.”

“We want this to be the beginning of a new era of friendly cooperation between the EU and an energetic Britain,” Johnson said in a pre-recorded address to the country broadcast an hour before Britain’s exit.

The departure marks the first stage of Brexit. An 11-month transition period now follows as Britain and the EU will negotiate new agreements on trade and a number of other issues. Britons, in the meantime, will see very little change.

Brexit supporters argue Britain's departure will allow it to strike trade deals with non-EU countries like the United States and growing Asian markets.

Breaking away from the EU also raises concerns for residents in Ireland and Northern Ireland, where protecting the peace after the Good Friday agreement of 1998 was a top priority.

The agreement ended three decades of sectarian violence known as the "Troubles" between groups that wanted to reunify Ireland and those who favored Northern Ireland remaining in Britain.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

==========================================================

So to summarize, the good news is that the UK will now negotiate new and better trade deals for the country, and that the EU is forced to reform itself. Boris Johnson is probably the first politician to actually maintain his campaign promises and get Brexit done, regardless of how you may feel about that. The bad news is that Britain's standing on the world stage will be a battle between America and China for influence (America, fuck yeah?) and that the matter of Northern Ireland comes back into question after the Good Friday agreement has essentially become null and void. Also, there is the matter of Scottish independence and while I'm not a UK citizen I would like to voice my opinion that Scotland should stay in the commonwealth, however Northern Ireland belongs to Ireland so there should be some sort of agreement on that lest The Troubles 2.0 begin and the IRA comes back. So if you live in Belfast, Derry, or any part of Northern Ireland, watch out for car bombs and avoid the pub.

Let's wish luck to Great Britain, less invasion and less Orwellian measures. A good time for Britons.

I honestly wish Britain good luck, this was a brave move.

Maybe we will live to see the day now that Britain will no longer be brainlessly invaded and occupied in the future. Using British google sometime ago from London was considering me Arabic. Too many Mohammeds live in London. On a National Sovereignity scale this may actually be somehow solved.

Farage is a great man.

Thank you HPZM

It's all very good and positive for England. I imagine our Gods have had a hand in helping break the horrible political eu super power up.

The eu was supposed to be a common market. But it morphed into being political. (Unaccounted political) with leaders we never voted for and who are not accountable to us. They made their own laws, had their own flag and anthem and want their own army. What happens is you just become a state in the eu country and lose your own country and identity. Sovereignity here we come it's the only way.

The start of more to come I hope. As Nigel Farage said. He loves Europe but hates the EU.

Scotland where I am the now is actually very secular. And it is a concern to me these Scottish Independence fanatics that want to break away from England. Only to join the hated eu.

What these Scottish Independence fanatics say is that in the UK parliament Scottish MP's are outnumbered so they have no say in anything because the vote always goes in England's favour.

My problem with Independence is that we like Ireland are small countries with low population numbers. Scotland is something like 5 million people. They want to be independent from England but Scotland and probably Ireland as well. They are poor countries without much development and wealth. Scotland seems historically impoverished and they blame the English for invading and making them poor. The saying about the North South divide. Life expectancy up North is lower than it is down South in Endland. Seems like they think they cannot survive without the eu.

It is very surprising and strange this secular thing to me. Neighbours can not talk and hate each other because one is Catholic and the other is Protestant. Or that they support different football teams. I mean grow up fighting over uselessness.

I've found these Scottish Independence fanatics change very fast and show their teeth the minute they learn you don't support their belief that Scotland should be a seperate country.

Anyway the Scottish read emotional and persuasive propaganda that make them brainwashed. So sad and scary but I'm over the moon for the UK and Brexit.

WOW i have been waiting for this for so long it's unbelievable like the UK just left the EU in this year and the queen is going to die in this year and this year is just getting started lol

I know the Queen is pretty old, but where did you get the idea that she's supposed to die this year? And besides, the Monarchy won't fall unless the UK drafts an entirely new constitution that leaves the monarchy out completely. Her heir is Prince Charles, and he will take over upon the Queen's death so the monarchy won't collapse until there's a complete constitutional reformation.

I think the VoC works differently with very big events. For example if someone gets murdered during a VoC then they dont magically come back to life afterwards. But I could definitely see some complications coming from this.
