I found a copy in the library, but it was translated by a Ralph Manheim who is determined to make me know that figure of the past was evil, evil, evil; it even shows in his text notes. The introduction was written by an Abraham Foxman, & it, too, is all about "ooo, figure of the past, eeeeevil."

Is there a better translation that lets the author speak for himself, without adding unwanted commentary?

Thanks! I downloaded the copy from booksforstatanspeople, & it not only is free from unwanted comments, but it reads more clearly, too.
