My astronomy teacher says that the signs that we think we have aren't really our signs.

He says, "Suppose you were born between Aug 22 and sept 22. According to astrologers, you are a Virgo because at birth, the sun was in the constellation of Virgo. But it wasn't! The sun was in the constellation of Leo. What a blow to your ego to realize that all of the traits of a Virgo that you have identified with are wrong because because you are really a Leo. Astrological columns are more than 2,000 years behind the times and nobody is what he thinks he is.
Another embarrassing fact is that the sun actually spends more time in the constellation of Ophiuchus than it does in Scorpius yet there is no sign for Ophiuchus. In other words, there are actually 13 and not 12 signs of the Zodiac" Prof. Highfill

I have no idea what to make of this. Maybe it's just more jewish trash, just to keep the masses deluded, but I don't know.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

You are talking about tropical and sidereal astrological systems. According to the tropical system (which most astrologers use) you are a Virgo but to the sidereal you are a Leo. Your teacher is right, the sidereal system is the true that shows the sun's and other planets accurate position.

But the tropical system (it assumes the sun is in 0 degrees of aries at the beginning of spring) is the one that has esoteric meaning and proved true in astrology. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal system but I never heard anyone make accurate predictions with that.

Ophiuchus also has no part in astrology because it cuts off degrees from Scorpio and Sagittarius. The signs are supposed to have 30 degrees from the whole 360 degree chart therefore dividing it in 12 equal signs. I know in reality it isn't equal, but again WHO CARES once it is proved to lead to correct predictions in astology?
