So I have completed the script and launched it a few hours ago. It will take longer than expected to have a working script, as this one is relying on wget, and it's downloading everything from the forum by following every link. The issue with this is that the forum runs phpBB which is, as the name suggests, a PHP program. This means that pages are created "on the go" instead of being static, and this does not play nice with wget: the script is still running, it has downloaded more than 4GiB so far (I expected it to be around 2-2.5GiB), so it's obvious that it's not really working. But do not worry, I am going to keep working on that and post here everything useful.

I've stopped it just right now. It downloaded 4.9GiB of data, which is made of html files of every link virtually possible on the forum address (I guess it tried non-existing ones as well).

I have not tested any scripts out myself, but did a quick search and found these suggestions for using wget:

I am doing this right now. Here's the command I'm using:

wget -k -m -E -p -np -R memberlist.php*,faq.php*,viewtopic.php*p=*,posting.php*,search.php*,ucp.php*,viewonline.php*,*sid*,*view=print*,*start=0* -o log.txt http://www.example.com/forum/

I wanted to strip out those pesky session id things (sid=blahblahblah). They seem to get added automatically by the index page, and then get attached to all the links in a virus-like fashion. Except for one squirreled away somewhere - which links to a plain index.php which then continues with no sid= parameter. (Perhaps there's a way to force the recursive wget to start from index.php - I don't know).

I have also excluded some other pages that lead to a lot of cruft being saved. In particular memberlist.php and viewtopic.php where p= is specified can create thousands of files!

Due to this bug in wget http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?20808 it will still download an astounding number of those useless files - esepcially viewtopic.php?p= ones - before simply deleting them. So this is going to burn a lot of time and bandwidth.

I know this is super old and I just wanted to put my 2 cents in.

wget -m -k -K -E -l 7 -t 6 -w 5 http://www.website.com

A little clarification regarding each of the switches:

-m Essentially, this means “mirror the site”, and it recursively grabs pages & images as it spiders through the site. It checks the timestamp, so if you run wget a 2nd time with this switch, it will only update files/pages that are newer than the previous time.

-k This will modify links in the html to point to local files. If instead of using things like page2.html as links throughout your site you were actually using a full http://www.website.com/page2.html you’ll probably need/want this. I turn it on just to be on the safe side – chances are at least 1 link will cause a problem otherwise.

-K The option above (lowercase k) edits the html. If you want the “untouched” version as well, use this switch and it will save both the changed version and the original. It’s just good practise in case something is awry and you want to compare both versions. You can always delete the one you didn’t want later.

-E This saves HTML & CSS with “proper extensions”. Careful with this one – if your site didn’t have .html extensions on every page, this will add it. However, if your site already has every file named with something like “.htm” you’ll now end up with “.htm.html”.

-l 7 By default, the -m we used above will recurse/spider through the entire site. Usually that’s ok. But sometimes your site will have an infinite loop in which case wget will download forever. Think of the typical website.com/products/jellybeans/sort-by-/name/price/name/price/name/price example. It’s somewhat rare nowadays – most sites behave well and won’t do this, but to be on the safe side, figure out the most clicks it should possibly take to get anywhere from the main page to reach any real page on the website, pad it a little (it would suck if you used a value of 7 and found out an hour later that your site was 8 levels deep!) and use that #. Of course, if you know your site has a structure that will behave, there’s nothing wrong with omitting this and having the comfort of knowing that the 1 hidden page on your site that was 50 levels deep was actually found.

-t 6 If trying to access/download a certain page or file fails, this sets the number of retries before it gives up on that file and moves on. You usually do want it to eventually give up (set it to 0 if you want it to try forever), but you also don’t want it to give up if the site was just being wonky for a second or two. I find 6 to be reasonable.

-w 5 This tells wget to wait a few seconds (5 seconds in this case) before grabbing the next file. It’s often critical to use something here (at least 1 second). Let me explain. By default, wget will grab pages as fast as it possibly can. This can easily be multiple requests per second which has the potential to put huge load on the server (particularly if the site is written in PHP, makes MySQL accesses on each request, and doesn’t utilize a cache). If the website is on shared hosting, that load can get someone kicked off their host. Even on a VPS it can bring some sites to their knees. And even if the site itself survives, being bombarded with an insane number of requests within a few seconds can look like a DOS attack which could very well get your IP auto-blocked. If you don’t know for certain that the site can handle a massive influx of traffic, use the -w # switch.5 is usually quite safe. Even 1 is probably ok most of the time. But use something.

Bro this is not the entire forum, i checked. Go to page 13 of important sermons, not of them are present. Same with the other forums starting from page 5 (in the jos666 main forum. ) I figured something like this would happen because i had done it before like this. However i can tell you how to fix it.

You have to download each sub forum separately.For example, if you wanted to download the "Important articles from JOS Ministry" forum, you'd paste this link ,

You'd select 'multiple mirror' and go to the options, in that go to build and select "NO EXTERNAL PAGES".
Then let it run. The result will be the entire sub-forum you selected will be downloaded in addition to the first page of other forums(no other pages) and the home page. You'll have to do this with each subforum sequentially and it may come out to be ~14GB or so.

The problem with this strategy is that it doesn't archive the forum completely (or even 50%). Although it's all your choice.

Usually yes, as it has many options...

That's why its bigger in size. It's probably working fine. I have it on 1 layer only grabbing the forum domain. That's why its 2.5 GB it's only grabbing ancient forums.

HP, just pinging you here, I have a question for you: Do you have complete access to the forum's database? Because if you have access to it by a shell it would be A LOT easier to develop a backup script (that you only will be running, anyway).
PhpBB works in a similar way to Wordpress: It creates the webpages on the go, but the actual data (users, posts, comments, etc) is inside of a database (usually mysql or anyway SQL-like. Don't tell details in public, it is a security risk).

HP, just pinging you here, I have a question for you: Do you have complete access to the forum's database? Because if you have access to it by a shell it would be A LOT easier to develop a backup script (that you only will be running, anyway).
PhpBB works in a similar way to Wordpress: It creates the webpages on the go, but the actual data (users, posts, comments, etc) is inside of a database (usually mysql or anyway SQL-like. Don't tell details in public, it is a security risk).

i feel this is an extreme security risk, and the database can easily be gotten with something like httrack, if you simply download the backup i made recently you can see its fully 100% the entire forum and 100% offline. wget should have no problem, as i believe httrack is wget in gui form.

News here. I have run wget overnight as I stated in my previous post, here's the results:
It has downloaded a total of ~10GiB but kept only 1.2GiB of files. I tried browsing them locally and it works, I will update that to Mega.nz so you guys can test it. There are .html files along with other file required for the site to work such as .css files (needed for styling the site), I wanted to upload a list but it is too long to be accepted lol so I will post a mega link once I compress and upload the whole thing, this will require some time as my connection is pretty slow. Will let you guys updated but this starts to look like a win

All the steps can be made into the script, which is nearly complete. These will be:

• Ensure all programs are installed, if not, ask for installation
• Download the files from the forum
• Create a compressed archive of the forum files that have been downloaded
• Upload the archive to Mega.nz
• Display the Mega link to the archive for easy sharing

there's no real index, just a snapshot of the index which takes you to the site links. so its really hard to navigate, you would have to know the exact url of the post you are looking for and you would have to then search all the files for it. but from the looks of it I'm not sure if all the subforums are there, can't tell because I can't navigate the forum naturally with this method. also, I notice that the download rendered the site to more or less, plain html, and php, black and white text only.

I don't know if you've downloaded the archive I made, but the index works flawlessly and the site looks as it does when you go to it online.

I understand how frustrating it is to put your work into something and have it not work out as you planned, still the effort is great, maybe you can run a script that opens up httrack, then creates a new project, names its ancientforums##-##-## then uploaded it to a folder synced to a mega account folder, so no uploading needs to be done. just my thoughts. but as for now it takes nothing but a few minutes of my time to start the archiving program an hour for it to finish and shortly afterwards to have it uploaded, so its not a pain, not as much of a pain as it is to mess with programming that doesn't want to work. anyways appreciate your work, Hail Satan forever

i found it, downloaded it, unziped it, tried both index.htm and index.php but when i clicked a link it would not load it offline, it would only load it by going to the link. and it was also in html black and white format. I can upload a video or a screencast of the process, if you want.

I don't know if you've downloaded the archive I made, but the index works flawlessly and the site looks as it does when you go to it online.

I understand how frustrating it is to put your work into something and have it not work out as you planned, still the effort is great, maybe you can run a script that opens up httrack, then creates a new project, names its ancientforums##-##-## then uploaded it to a folder synced to a mega account folder, so no uploading needs to be done. just my thoughts. but as for now it takes nothing but a few minutes of my time to start the archiving program an hour for it to finish and shortly afterwards to have it uploaded, so its not a pain, not as much of a pain as it is to mess with programming that doesn't want to work. anyways appreciate your work, Hail Satan forever

The index is inside the archive with all other files, and works for me. Maybe you didn't find it? Also it does actually render for me with full images and style (not only b/w text). This might happen if you do not unzip the archive before browsing it perhaps.
I will try to solve all of the issues you pointed out anyway, thank you for your feedback!

i found it, downloaded it, unziped it, tried both index.htm and index.php but when i clicked a link it would not load it offline, it would only load it by going to the link. and it was also in html black and white format. I can upload a video or a screencast of the process, if you want.

Ok, thanks, hope with your knowledge, will help @Gerecht Ror to indexing better the site itaJoS and Library, and too JoS. I was made a test about SEO with a different tools online, both itajos (jos italy) and JoS, both result very low, almost irrelevant (about 3/10). I don't know if these tools are attendibile, but...if there is something to improve, why not? I had done some light research on how to improve to indexing pdf documents online, one say the 3rd option should better, this is why i use this. Remember that i have zero knowledge about code, so i don't know how things works.

By looking at the website's code, it needs a total rewrite. It uses obsolete standards (HTML4) and bad code, this is why it is bad indexed. I believe it has been made by an automatic website builder instead of a human programmer. We can work on this by opening a git page (github, gitlab, ...) where we work together at the website code, writing it from scratch. Most important thing is to keep the style (css) the content (html) and the optional scripts (javascript) separated. Being the content simple enough (mostly text and some images), a template can be done in very short time.
About the PDFs specifically, I would use this type of nomenclature: "date-title.pdf" or "progressive_number-title.pdf". The way PDFs are named is not very relevant, they are used to keep them organized. Note that search engine read the content of the PDFs (they read them inside), they do not care that much about the file names. Also I would add a list with the hashed files to avoid people crediting fakes or rigged files. Here's an example with MD5 hashing:

Is it the entire forum or only the sermons section ?

Bro this is not the entire forum, i checked. Go to page 13 of important sermons, not of them are present. Same with the other forums starting from page 5 (in the jos666 main forum. ) I figured something like this would happen because i had done it before like this. However i can tell you how to fix it.

You have to download each sub forum separately.For example, if you wanted to download the "Important articles from JOS Ministry" forum, you'd paste this link ,
https://ancient-forums.com/viewforum.php?f=24

You'd select 'multiple mirror' and go to the options, in that go to build and select "NO EXTERNAL PAGES".
Then let it run. The result will be the entire sub-forum you selected will be downloaded in addition to the first page of other forums(no other pages) and the home page. You'll have to do this with each subforum sequentially and it may come out to be ~14GB or so.
