Prayer is one of the most important parts of Zevism and one of the most misunderstood. People pray in all sorts of ways, and while all prayers are observed by the Gods, they are not all equally powerful.
At its core, prayer is just a form of dialogue: you make a request to a deity, who then responds. You make the request by invoking their name, focusing on their image/sigil, etc. In other words, you need to direct your prayer “somewhere”; you don’t just speak to a wall or a computer screen. That much is obvious, and most people already do this without even thinking about it. But by definition, a dialogue is two-way communication. You transmitted the message, but how do you receive an answer?
Like a radio, you need to tune in to the correct frequency to receive the information that you desire, and you can’t do that by just “talking” to a God or reading a prayer.
So how do you tune in to the right frequency? You do it by changing your state of being. If what we call “feeling” is just conscious awareness of the vibration frequency we are in, then changing how you feel will change your vibration frequency, and since all frequencies carry information, you will consciously or subconsciously receive and act upon that information, thus getting your answer.
For example, if you believe that the God you are trying to reach through prayer is the manifestation of wealth, health, happiness, protection, or whatever else you desire, then you must get on the same frequency of vibration as that which you wish to receive. Since most people only pray when they need something, their prayers come from a state of fear, lack, and desperation. They are focused on the very circumstances they wish to escape, and their inner state is therefore incompatible with the reality they are trying to affirm.
As anyone who has ever “prayed” like that can attest, an answer to such prayers never arrives. That is not because the Gods are indifferent, but because you are not in the right state [level of vibration] to receive their answer.
Prayer isn’t the hope of a beggar, but the faith of a creator.
The dictionary definition of faith is “complete trust, confidence, or reliance on a person, system, or idea.” This is in stark contrast to what people often confuse faith with: hope.
Hope is a form of emotional avoidance or denial. It is a coping mechanism through which you desperately wish for a better future while inwardly expecting the worst. You hope because you do not yet believe that the outcome you desire is possible, or because you are unwilling to accept it as a reality you can embody in the present. Your attention remains fixed on the distance between what you want and what you believe you have.
Prayer is the affirmation of your desired reality as if it is happening now, despite external circumstances. And the way that you affirm it is through FAITH, which permeates your actions and the results they produce, eventually manifesting your desires in the physical world.
True faith is a knowingness, an unshakable certainty in yourself and your abilities. It is not a wish, nor is it the desperate hope that a miracle will somehow happen to you. It is the knowingness that YOU CAN PERFORM MIRACLES.
Consider the four-minute mile. For most of human history, the idea of running a mile in less than four minutes was regarded as an impossible task. It is even said that the Egyptians set lions upon people to try to get them to run a mile in under four minutes. Physiologists said that the human body could not sustain such a pace, that we didn’t have the right kind of build for the task. Then, on 6 May 1954, Roger Bannister ran a mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds, becoming the first person to officially break the four-minute barrier. Just 46 days later, another runner, John Landy, did it too. Today, over 2,350 people have run a mile in under four minutes, the youngest of which was only 15 years old!
What changed? Did Roger Bannister’s body undergo spontaneous evolution to allow him to do the impossible? What about the thousands of people who followed him? Of course not. It was never an impossible task to begin with, and the only thing that had changed was the faith of one man. Once he had done it, the barrier that had seemed so insurmountable suddenly became attainable to thousands of others.
The real test of faith comes when there is no precedent to point to, no proof to reassure you, no one to tell you that you are right. It comes when the world around you insists that your goal is impossible, when your circumstances appear to confirm every doubt, and when you have nothing to rely on except your own conviction.
This is where people falter. They wait for the external world to give them permission to believe. They demand evidence before they will commit themselves, reassurance before they will act, and certainty from their circumstances before they will cultivate certainty within themselves. They want the miracle to happen first so that they can believe in it afterward.
Faith is the ability to hold fast to your conviction before the evidence appears, to embody the state of being associated with your desired reality even when your present circumstances seem to contradict it. It is the willingness to act in accordance with that conviction, to persevere through uncertainty, and to refuse to let the apparent limitations of the present dictate the boundaries of the future.
This is the essence of prayer. You do not approach the Gods as a beggar pleading for an exception to the rules of your life. You cultivate the inner certainty from which you can act, create, and transform your circumstances. You affirm your desired reality not as a distant possibility that you desperately hope will come to pass, but as the reality you have committed yourself to embody.
Ritual use:
The same concept applies to magic, and especially God Rituals, as in a very real sense, the ritual verses are prayers in themselves. Let's take Athena’s Ritual as an example:
O Athena, Aegis-Bearer, Gorgon-Slayer,
the aegis of Zeus you bear upon your chest,
the head of Medusa upon your shield.
Whoever sees your face in battle turns to stone.
Your aegis is the shield of the Temple of Zeus.
Protect us as you protect your city.
The verse above is called “The Aegis-Bearer · Ἡ Αἰγιδοφόρος," and it is functionally a prayer for protection, so you should feel safe, invulnerable, untouchable, etc., while vibrating the runes and reading the prayer. You must tap into the emotional equivalent of the content of the prayer and embody it.
You will see very limited results if you just read the text with apathy and move on to the next one. The power of these rituals comes from the energies that you tap into, and you cannot access them in a state of indifference.
The final step of the ritual is the most important one. You must meditate on the energy you raised and the effects it has on you and the world, but you must do this in a non-analytical way. Just focus on the feeling you have and amplify it as much as possible, but without struggling to do so. There’s a very fine line you must walk here. A good example of this can be seen in the Grand Ritual of Zeus:
NOW YOU MUST NOT VIBRATE, BUT SIT IN COMPLETE SILENCE FOR 1 MINUTE!
Close your eyes and meditate solely on the void within your mind, keeping it as empty as possible.
In this moment, silence is regarded as the highest form of fellowship with our God.
This is a fundamental reality of how meditation works. The very act of analyzing, trying to explain things, drawing mental images, etc., keeps your left brain active, which doesn’t allow you to relax into a meditative state. In a very real sense, the more active your mind is, the more your prayer is invalidated, as the mental chatter literally disconnects you from the divine.
You will notice that if a feeling is intense enough, you can’t think clearly or even think at all, kind of like when you are filled with rage and seeing red, or when your mind goes blank when you’re making love. There’s just the feeling and nothing else.
If any mental images or visions do appear, they shouldn’t be coming from you. In other words, you are just a receiver in this state, so anything that you do see is “happening” to you as a consequence of you tapping into that frequency. This is fine and welcome.
The more you put in, the more you get out.
