About early islamic conquests

If muhammad and other caliphs never existed, how and why did first muslim conquests happen? Thanks.

I don't know if Muhammad was real or not but a bunch of fanatics claiming a prophet told them to kill their neighbors can still cause a lot of damage to civilization.
