A question about sigils

How did sigils originate? Do individual demons just come up with their own?

I think I read that they are a map of the human soul when properly placed together. If I'm wrong could an HP explain.
I thought about printing all of the sigils out and put them in order based on the corresponding tarot card, then going through each of my major chakras chanting the demons names while also focusing on the sigil.
With how many different names the gods have I wonder if the more recent names we know them by also have a deeper meaning to them, maybe they took on names that when properly chanted work with our souls somehow.
