What follows is a short celebratory and epitaffial hymn, with an elegiac function, that I wrote some time ago. I wasn’t sure about translating it into english and publishing it here as well,
because although it rhymes in italian, I couldn’t render the same effect in english. I was not sure it was a good and worthy piece. But in the end, I was encouraged to share it here, so I hope it won’t be unwelcome.
To the valiant Leonidas
Warrior who knows the eternal nights,
Your sword sings the notes of an ancient memory,
And on the edge of this sword dance honor and freedom
For which you fight.
Silent guardian of unbroken vows,
The earth stained with red is the crucible of the souls of the strong,
Which melancholically to Zeus directs its funeral laments.
For your homeland, infinite paths have borne the weight of your helmet.
For your homeland, myriads of stars have shone, guiding your advance.
For your homeland, mighty winds have opened without ever leaving you stranded.
You walk so proud and courageous that even the night itself withdraws, opening the way for you.
Not even a relentless deadly cliff of arrows, black enough to veil the sky,
Could take away your honor and your glorious courage.
From your homeland your life was claimed that day,
For fate is fulfilled and the indifferent mountain of inevitability has finally collapsed.
And from a fallen flower, not only silent mourning but a star of hope and salvation was born.
The dawn that gilds the mountain peaks and warms the homeland, praises you.
The clear sky crossed by free swallows, remembers you.
The water of the rivers of the remembering harbor, protects you.
And even those who remained, carrying with them your voice and your memory, fell into the silence of that day.
But those who have lived and walked under the banner of the Gods do not truly vanish from the weave of time and, like an ancient song that resonates among the waves of memory, are never truly lost.
