That would describe it, yes. A jerking or pulling motion. :|
I used to get those all the time, and still do occasionally. I also have trouble getting into trances and I suspect that these jerks are coming from the body falling asleep but being startled back awake by the mind, which has not slowed down in unison with the body.
Maybe we aren't ready to tackle trances yet. I don't know what your situation is like but for me I find it difficult to slow down and be still, focused & in the moment, both in mind and in body. If this is how things are for you then I think this shows that we need to practice void meditation and slow breathing exercises to develop the concentration and relaxation skills necessary to reach the trance state.
Another thing is that it can be hard to tell if you're in a trance if you lack experience with them. Maybe you are reaching a light trance but because it doesn't feel significantly different enough for you to realize it, you believe that you have yet to reach it at all. The frustration of this makes your mind move along more rapidly and it feeds into itself. So, the lesson here is to be more aware of how you're feeling and to be patient and observant. And make sure to minimize distractions.
It's a skill, not an innate ability. It takes time to develop and if you don't have a solid foundation for it(focus, awareness, etc) then it's going to be difficult to build.
