Wizards and folklore

I have been wondering about wizards for quite awhile. Does anybody know if they actually existed, obviously the lore about them is blown up into crazy proportions but obviously they had to stem from something. So I guess my question would be if they did exist could they have been Satanists or (I'm assuming) Paganists? If so what kind of symbols would they have used in anything like books or did they maybe use runes of some kind. If anybody has opinions or knowledge on this matter I'd love to hear it.
